  • Towing with D4D Auto

    Hi All,

Now that ive picked up my Cub Camper, whats the advice on towing with an Auto 5 speed box, ive heard you shouldn't leave it in drive when towing, put it in 4th, but it seemed to be high reving on the straights so I put in back into D, whats the general opinion on Towing with Autos??

    Cheers

I tow 2t of camper - I leave it in D and the box generally works itself out. I shift down when approaching hills, overtaking etc.

With the weight of the Cub you won't have any troubles in D. Anything 2T+ I'd be driving in 4.

      Nice looking camper too

Manual says s4 and max 100km. The reduced speed and lower gear is to keep transmission temps down I believe. I towed my camper (very similar to yours) in s4 at 100 in my new 150 and got 13l per hundred k. Would have used less fuel in D but transmission would have noticed the difference up hills.
You can drive in say D on down hill and flat and flick it over to S on any incline.

Steve, do you have a scan gauge? Easy enough to set up both torque controller and auto trans temp. I leave it in D and flick back to 4 for the hills, this keeps the temps under control.

Oh, do tell.. I have scanguage, but not really used it... Would be good to monitor those two.

It's an interesting exercise watching the auto trans temp on the scanguage, and playing around with the gears.
Hills in D get the temp rising rapidly, flicking back to 4 settles things.
Can't recommend scanguage highly enough for towing.

Steve, your beast should tow that little baby like its not there, drive is good.
If you find yourself in a hilly area, then to help the trans from changing up & down a lot you can help out by selecting the correct gear for the speed.
Shift down on steep descents, but you already know all this stuff, you can drive.
                            Just go for it

                              Mate,
I have the base model TVan and it tows fine in D. I would think they weigh about the same? I have tried sports mode like you I thought it would be the right thing to do and to honest, as stated above, it works it out fine. If I shift from D to S4 then the revs go up by 1000 rpm and it locks up. If the auto works it out it dials in the torque converter and this adds 500 rpm which is easy enough to get over any hill on the highways from Sydney to Melbourne.

My only recommendation is a cooler and valve body upgrade. The shift feel is fantastic and even a run up the mountain working the gear box across 3 gears I can place my hand on the surface of the cooler. Meaning the oil temperature is cooler than the water temperature. That's got to be good. Cheers
