  • Converting GXL Seats to Electric

    Hi All,

Can anyone advise if you can convert or swap the Front Seats on a 07/08 GXL to Electric as per the VX or Grande?? Is there some form of power plug for it to connect into under the seats?

With no ajustments on the GXL Seat, I am looking into getting some second hand Leather seats, to make it a bit for comfortable.

Don't know about the Grande seats, but I don't imagine there would be anything preventing fitment of an aftermarket seat such as a Recaro etc that had its own infinite adjustments.

Oh to have money to burn
I checked out the price of Recaro seats from an online selleer: Just under $1800 (including fitmentsbut not fitting) per seat.

The main beef i have with the gxl seat is the lack of adjustable lumbar support. So i'm with P..08, let's see if we can find some wrecked seats from a VX or Grande. I'd be concerned that the electricals might not match tho.

I suppose, Grandeman might rightly point out that if one wants all the refinements of the Grande, one should expect to pay a Grand price

Height adjustment in a driver's seat is a basic human right - I am sure it is enshrined in our Constitution.

I think shame on Toyota for being so mean as to leave out simple but necessary adjustments on a driver's seat (height and lumbar) in a car worth more than 50 grand!

Although, anyone who has seen the price of the "poverty pack" 200 series at $80K+ would think that Prado owners are getting off cheap...

You could get a pneumatic lumbar support fitted to the existing seats.

Most auto trimmers would be able to do this.

                    Hi Stuart

I've had electric adjustment on a couple of cars. I recon the only advantage in having them is if there is a memory so that it can go back to your favourite setting after someone else has changed the settings. Two memories are better ... one for you and one for the wife. If you are going to spend megabucks on power, you should see if the seats come with memory, otherwise I reckon you'll use the power adjustment on only rare occasions and wonder why you spent the money.

                      Hi All,

As a Single person, I don't think I will have any need for a seat with memory, as I am the only person driving it.

The electric seat gives you the ajustments that you need to be comfortable on long trips.

I think those of us who bought GXL models should complain to Toyota, as the Height, lumber and seat tilt are all standard on the ST Nissan Patrol which I did have and should be standard on the GXL model.

I was disapointed when I took delivery of my GXL Prado as you are paying around 60K for a 4WD which doesn't have these basics. I will confess I didn't check this out before hand.

When I did a test drive, the only vehicle the dealer (Nunawading Toyota)had was a Grande in Diesel.

Also, my situation didn't permit me to afford the extra dollars for a VX.
My Parents had a budget of only 30K, enough with my trade in.

Anyway, I am still waiting on an answer if the power plug which I believe to be fitted under the seat (I need this confirmed) is for the Electric seats.

Question does the GX have seat height adjustment and could you pinch the setup from a GX and install it into a GXL, ie using the GXL seats with the GX rails and height adjustment, if it has any??? Hmmmm...

As others have mentioned in this post - I also was never informed of what is not included in the $60k Prado. Although the drivers seat was comfortable at time of test drive, I would have liked lumber support and height adjustment - but in the end, a few little missing bits, don't really concern me as I'm happy with the purchase.

Spoke with local Motor Body Trimmer who suggested:

                              a) speak to Toyota about compatibility between VX and GXL if replacing with electric seats ... apparently not as simple as just unbolting one seat and bolting in the other, even if the electrics match! Even if they do match, sounds pretty pricey
                              b) The pneumatic lumbar support was a bit more of a win; $150 supply and fit ... may take a closer look at this one.
