Spoke with local Motor Body Trimmer who suggested:
a) speak to Toyota about compatibility between VX and GXL if replacing with electric seats ... apparently not as simple as just unbolting one seat and bolting in the other, even if the electrics match! Even if they do match, sounds pretty pricey
b) The pneumatic lumbar support was a bit more of a win; $150 supply and fit ... may take a closer look at this one.
Has Bear did you ever get this done?

I would have to agree, Toyota are VERY TIGHT not to supply electrics on a 60 grand vehicle. I even had them on my humble Holden one tonner. It was the only good thing about the damm thing.
I reckon Toyota should lift their act in this case, because you would find it hard to find anyone else who does not provide electric seats for this type of value
The pneumatic ones in our Recaros at work are a rubber bladder in the backrest, with a hose running out to a rubber bulb (like on a blood pressure test thingy). To increase the support you pump the bulb, to decrease you press a valve on the end of the bulb (opposite to the hose), this releases the air you pumped in deflating the bladder. Very simple but quite effective..
It Toyota added all the Grande options to the GLX it would be $75k instead of $60k. End of the day someone has to pay for these options and I can guarantee it won't be Toyota.
G'day Chuck,
I ended up buying some Platinum Sheepskin covers from SuperCheap. They come with a little adjustable lumbar support. A passable solution, but just!
But i agree with Kirk and others, the seats quality on the gxl is rather poor form on the part of Toyota. Have you ever checked out the seats in a Patrol, or even a Pajero ... much better quality.
And Jacto, the pneumatic system that Matt describes sounds like the one on offer from our local body trimmer. In the end, i decided against messing with the seat and then having some sort of a pump hanging out the side.
I have the VX with Leather Seats and I never touch the adjuster. I had a GXL before this with the leather option. I thought the GXL was just as comfy as the VX seats. I liked the after market leather a lot better too!
I would save your money and stick with what you've got. I don't think the VX seats are any better. Yes you get lumber support, but a $20 cushions a lot cheaper.
