  • Roof rail alternatives?

    Hey Guys,

I have an 04 grande which has the roof rails, what i want to know is there an alternative to them?

I have racks going across them which hold my awning and occasionally anything that won't fit inside but when looking at it I don't think the rails are very practical. I am going to purchase a roof top tent soonish and was hoping to throw the tent over the back door of the car instead of the sides but having the rails and cross bars the RTT would dangerously over hang. So i want an alternative to get the racks closer to the back..

Please help, whats out there? Can i unbolt the rails and put bars across?

There are many many threads on the various roof rack options, have you tried searching? You can fit a proprietary rack on a proprietary frame like the TJM or ARB options (and others) also Rhino bars direct to the roof and then the Tracklander system where a rail gets fitted to the roof. Lots of alternatives and lots of information here.

Hi there, I can't offer any advice on your current situation, but if you are interested in selling your roof rails I'm keen.

      Thanks.
(if anyone else has some, let me know).

I did a very lazy search, but since did a proper search and found lots. Thanks!

I'm torn whether to go for just 3 cross bars in place of the rails or whether to put a cage on there....

I'm about to fit a 'flat deck' to get the height down and give me a full roof of useful storage space.

Now i like the look of that! Only problem is that i do have a sun roof, but i also like that because theres a spot on the front you can mount a LED light bar.. Would you be able to mount an awning to that and a roof top tent?\

If you don't mind me asking, what did that set you back?

I think Tradesman do them for around $1000 fitted standard build. I am getting some extra tabs for LED bar, awning etc. and mine will come in around $1200 fitted. Still undecided if I want to sell the current rails/cross bars but if I do I could recoup $200-400.

That sounds like it will be perfect! Selling the current rails will definately help go toward that new LED bar! What brand is it?

Thanks D4D and Andrew. They definately look the goods, i prefer the flat type over the ones with the rail up off them. They'd be perfect for what i want to do. Only problem is i don't want to completely cover my sunroof. How do you clean the roof under them?

Tradesman can custom make a rack for a few extra $. I am sure they could make you a shorter rack to clear your sunroof.

I don't clean my roof now...
