  • Hello rear LSD, are you in there?

    Some background info first:
We got stuck on the weekend with the left side of the vehicle stuck in a mud rut. Both wheels spinning their hearts out. The right wheels were still on hard flat ground. Although I expected the front right to not move as there is no LSD in the front I thought the back right should and try and drag us out. The thing was it didn't move at all either.
    Is this normal?
I read that the rear LSD is kinda ordinary on these but figured it should do more than nothing. There are no dodgy noises coming from the diffs so assume they are ok and it's smooth to drive otherwise.
Can the LSD function not work but everything else in the diff is fine?

The Toyota LSD is good for the first 150m or 5 minutes which ever comes first. You can try pulling the handbrake on bit by bit to get the rear to drive but I haven't found that work on a Toyota either though it does work on another P vehicle.

That sounds totally normal, the LSD in the Prado is well known to be next to useless. A locker or 2 sorts it out

Ah great. Well sounds like it should be called LWD. Limited Working Diff.

Edit: Just emailed my local ARB store for pricing on lockers

That's because the handbrake is built as well as the LSD, barely adequate at best. Left foot braking works better (but takes more practice to master!)

I'd heard that doesn't make a whole lot of difference in the Toyota LSD's. Nissan LSD's however are a different thing.

Don't waste your time or money with the Toyota LSD. If you need drive get a locker.

It improves them a little but the results still aren't great, but you've basically paid the same labour as the install on a locker. Save a little extra coin and but some form of locker. I'll guarantee if you shim the LSD you'll still get a locker not to far down the track.

x2, I had my GQ rear LSD tightened and it would chirp around corners, wouldn't bother with the Prado. I have traction control which kind of overcomes it, if I didn't have TC I'd fit a locker.

Toyota LSD's have been crap for years... I remember a similar convo about hilux, 4 runner and surf's...

I've experienced exactly what you describe in a surf and the easiest solution (short of lockers) is to drive through your brakes which will even out the difference and have the diffs sending torque to the non spinning wheel.. It takes some practice but I got up a slippery incline a mate had to winch up using this technique... It will heat the brakes up but it's a get out of jail trick if you get stuck (it's basically what the traction control is doing but without releasing and re-applying constantly)
