  • Sticker removal leaving burn in marks???

    Hi guys

I decided to remove the '3000 turbo intercooler' stickers near the rear quarter panel windows as mine had been cracked by the sun and were looking faded. I used the old apply citrus degreaser to sticker, wait a bit, apply hairdryer to warm up the sticker and scrape off with plastic card.

As I was removing the sticker I noticed that the dark areas of the sticker have 'burnt' (for lack of a term I don't know) into the paint and have left marks that are darker than the surrounding paint (charcoal grey). The burning in seems to be beneath the clear coat as no matter how much I scrape with the rubber sticker remover it won't budge.

Any ideas on how I can remove these marks?

    Cheers

I had the same problem after removing the stickers and the easiest and cheapest way to fix this is to put on new stickers over the mark in the same position.

Hmmm I was trying to get away from reapplying stickers - kind of my reason for wanting them gone in the first place.

You can see the extent of the 'burn' in these pics - quite substantial. Compared to sjc's pic.

Haven't tried cut and polish yet. Not sure what to do if that doesn't work? Get a new bus on warranty? Haha yeah right.

Wow! So the bleeding of the edges was there already before you applied the citrus degreaser?

Yeah, you can see on the right of the pic the remaining sticker and on the left if with the sticker removed and the marks it has left - looks like the sticker is still there in its entirety!

                roza,
Mate that's pretty bad. Even if you placed a new sticker over the top as i suggested you would still see the stain around the edges. Must be shit ink used to print the stickers that migrates it way into the paint causing the stain. Just for the record i tried to cut and polish my stain out and didn't make any difference.

Would a caramel/toffee (cant remember what smell it gives off) wheel get this off?

Caramel wheel, proper sticker adhesive remover. That's where I would start.
It could however be a bit of sun fade in there as well.

                      Try the Caramel wheel first.

If it is the ink from the sticker you could try a Clay Bar.
These require a lot of care when using and use of a suitable lubricant.
Try this link for more info

If your not confident try a reputable car detailer or panel shop

                        Common problem.
                        Caramel wheel wont help.
We paint trucks and after removing decal and polishing it can be seen on some angles.
As the vehicle starts to fade it comes back and is more visible.
Alot of the problem is the paint fades and where the decal was doesn't.
Apart from painting i think the only way to cover it is reapply new decals.
Fit them 1st thing in the morning with clean hands as the clear sections of decal will hold dirty finger prints easily.

                          Sticker

100% with you there ,, I used to spray cars years ago, even after repainting you could still see where the sticker had been .

Just had a chat to the Panel and Paint manager at my local dealership to see if it was a common problem and he said the bleeding usually starts occuring as early as 2 weeks in the yard - makes you wonder why they even put the stickers on then!

When I get back from work next week I'll pop round to the yard and see what they say when they actually see the extent of the damage on my car but he's adamant that it will 'buff out'. Time will tell I suppose...

I'm pretty sure it won't buff out. I was informed by a spray painter that as the colour is metallic when it gets a lot of sun the colour will fade.
This is what has happened to mine. Painting won't work unless you paint the whole car. It's hard to blend metallic colours.
I just put new stickers on. I'll be changing mine to a black sticker soon.
                              First and second attempt
