  • off road damage - Battle scars

    Hi All

Has there been a post on truck damage during off road trips, i got my first minor damage y'day (sat 23/2)...Drivers side step moved about 40mm to the rear twisted mount brackets + dent to the fuel tank protection plate. I find the fuel tank sits very low & looks vunerable, any body else clobbered the tank plates?

Yep ... I've taken the tank plate off twice for re-modelling ..... mainly due to me overestimating my clearance ... and the planet's surface proving me wrong ops:

Also found it really handy to take off and clean out .. as each time it has been full of rocks and shite .... sitting trapped up against the plastic of the tank.

    Cheers
    Chippy

Plastic is a lot more compliant than other materials and extremely common these days.

On a recent trip to Coffin Bay S.A traveling down a steep sandy track with the trailer we snagged on 6mm steel mesh used for traction. The tow bar snagged and then gathered it hard under our full fuel tank and under the rear bumper....a major mess of wire spikes ...we then proceeded to cut wire with nothing more than regular pair of pliers, three hrs later and darkness we were free... The worry for us was a ruptured tank.the plate looks a little flimsy. The Wife has now given me the green light for a suspension upgrade on the new truck and the carrying of a large set of bolt cutters.
P.s What do you do in the likelihood of springing a leek???

Sorry just could not help myself     Its all Chippy's fault.

But in all seriousness being plastic and depending on the size of the leak/hole you can just put a screw in the hole to seal it up. This can also work for most fuel tanks, if you get some tech screws with the rubber grommets it works even better.

The result of driving over fallen timber and misjudging the off side. One mashed mud flap and bent side step.

The side step straighted out OK but have gotten a new mud flap as it keeps popping out.

                Cheers,

I know this is getting "off thread", but if you'll pardon the pun a screw with some thread seal tape (plumbers tape) would also be good for a temp repair to a small hole in a plastic tank.

Maybe a forum thread with 'bush mechanic' style repairs would be good. Things you have done or have seen done :?:
