  • List of faults new grande

Hi there this is my first go at this . Is there anyone out there that can help with any info re the faults that my pride and joy has its a 2005 Grande. 1/ there is a tingle that comes through the steering wheel at around 90-100km or light load moving off from the lights as it shifts through the gears after a drive your hands tingle even my Harley does not do this. 2/ The engine is very noisy and when cold is harsh and tappy it even sounds like the exhaust is leaking.3/ When pulling up at the lights there is a thud in the rear just like someone has run into the back. 4/ The steering seems vauge and it seems that you are allways correcting as it seems to wander. today it went in for its 10,000 service with this list in tow as things unfold i will let you all know. I hope i dont have a lemon
    I hope i havent got a lemon, now 4 1/2 years on i know i have.

    Hi Skycat,

I think the harsh noise when the engine is cold is just the header pipe (exhaust manifold), the way its made. I don't think its too much to worry about.

With the tingle and vauge steering, do you still have the original tyres fitted? Some All-terrian and mud tyres can give a small vibration thru the steering and wander abit more than normal road tyres. Maybe it just needs a wheel alinment

The thud from the rear happens in my car (and a few other cars) as well and i am not sure what is causing it.

    Let us know the outcome.
    Cheers, Terry.

      1. Are you talking about vibration at about 95kmh? This is know problem
as well. I.e after you changed from 3rd to 4 gear you can feel extra noise/vibration?

For number 3 - this is sounds like a fuel tank problem - which is known
problem with 120 series prados. Take it to the dealer and then should replace the fuel tank...

      4. You should have no vibration in the wheel. If you got it that means
that your tyres are not ballanced properly and or wheel alignment out
of whack. I run Grandtreks and GoodYear MTRS as a second set tyres
and none of them have this problems....

I have the "thud" also. Although it is not immediate upon stopping. It is a few (maybe 5 or 10 seconds) after stopping.

I would be interested to know what it is so I can tell the dealer at service time.

I don't trust my dealer to diagnose & fix it as I have been waiting for 3 months for them to get a moulding in for one of the rear doors which had a chip in the paint upon delivery.

Lc120, can you give us more information about the thud please.

As AL said, it doesn't happen as soon as you stop, 10-15 seconds later, but mine does not do it all the time and it varies from just being able to feel it, to a harsh thud that feels like someone as run in to the back of the car.
          Cheers, Terry.

The fuel tank problem is covered on lcool list...
Just search for "fuel tank problem"... Below is some of it.

            ________________________________________________
Hi, I've had my main tank replaced twice to solve the problem, was
quite a saga. After the first replacement there was a small fuel
leak, took several trips back to Toyota to prove it. The O-ring
around the fuel sender had been damaged, and after they replaced it,
the knocking came back (tank is supposed to be redesigned)! Toyota
head office could only suggest to replace the tank again, and
haven't had any problems since (about 5 weeks now).

            Scott.

Hey thanks guys this is great i get more info here than from TOYOTA, they say its all normal i will not accept this. When we picked up the truck the sales guy said all the right things.i should have known it was to good to be true when we got home i had a look at the service book and found that the PD sheet was not filled out then found that the sticker 4000VVT was missing on the left side. Then the dash started to have this cracking sound as you drive even on a smooth road then the badges fell off the TOYOTA bull bar. Gee my old 1992 Surf drives nicer i will never sell that old truck.  The tyres are still OE the only dirt road the Prado been on was to Hill End so there is no damage under the body.this will change when the new smell goes but before we see the rough stuff TOYOTA need to sort out the currant issues i will continue to push, its such a shame the kids love it even the boss thinks its OK, WE WONT GIVE UP The squeky wheel gets the oil as they say. Thank you all for your help Skycat
              I hope i havent got a lemon, now 4 1/2 years on i know i have.

I'm told the exhaust leak sound is the sound of the exhaust gases hitting the header pipe on the way out. Toyota say it is common to most V6's and is nothing to worry about.

are we talking about TD or petrol prado skycat. Finally picked up my Turbo GXL 2 weeks ago and have close to 1000KM on it now and the only complaint i have is the bonnet seems not be latching properly.
It looks like every thing is in line but drive down a marginally rough tar road and there sounds like clunk from the front end and can see the bonnet move
origionaly thought the bullbar was moving then the bonnet protector but mucked around with the latch and made it better but still there
Will get it fixed first service

The thud you hear when you stop is the rear airbag suspension adjusting its height.
Mine does it also. You get used it.
If you brake hard it will also continue to lower the vehicle once you are compltely stopped, this will also cause a clunking sound at the rear.

To increase your steering response just click the suspension up harder from the middle setting.

                            Hi Skycat

I have a different theory on point 3 - the thump that occurs a few seconds after stopping. My 04 GXL has done this since new, and I reckon it's the auto box shifting down to 1st gear. I don't know why it has this delay, or why it thumps, but that's what I've figured out (and I'm not bothered about it). The GXL doesn't have air suspension so it's not that (on my car anyway!).

The wandering around on the road is (in my opinion) a combination of wide tires, suspension set-up and uneven road surface. I notice it particularly when slowing under light brakes - at times in heavy traffic it gets a bit scary as the front end weaves too and fro, tracking along the bumps in the road surface - not noticable on smooth surfaces though.

One problem I did have that drove me crazy for 40k was a thump / crash from the back when driving over "sharp" lateral bumps - like where the seal has been cut across and resealed. The dealer fiddled with a few things to no avail, so I allocated a Saturday to find the cause. Took off the tank bash plate - no change, took off the spare wheel - slight improvement, greased the rear door latch, and tightened up the tapered plastic door support block - problem solved! All it was, was the door jolting vertically over the bumps. Car is now solid and quiet over all surfaces - bliss!

                            Some different views...

                              G'day Doug,

My 05 GXL has the thud in it as well and Toyota have ruled out that its the auto going back into low gear as the thud happened a few times while it was locked in first gear when they were testing the car.
                              Cheers, Terry.
