  • D4D OR older diesel OR Petrol??

    Peeps
    I am confused!!
What is best to buy - I have an offer of a great 2005 Grande 170K and neat OR a 2009 Petrol Grande - neat and (more expensive if course)
And I have a prado grande - D4D 2008 and a great car as well.
    My question is:
1/ Is the D4D better than the older diesel motor?
2/ Do I buy Petrol or Diesel
3/ We are just setting ourselves up to go "Glamping" in group tours etc. we will NOT tow caravans/we will not go bush bashing (not too much anyway).

Please offer me some direction here peeps - would really appreciate it!
    Thanks

Hi there & welcome. I would have a look and search for the D4D injector issues and make up your mind. I personally bought the older diesel as it was cheaper, easier to maintain and less issues. It is also less in power to the D4D and economy is a little worse, however as I wanted to keep the car long term this was the best option for me. The petrols are a great motor, very reliable, last a long term and loads of power. They can be quite thirsty on petrol however in my opinion the purchase price is so much lower it is pretty easily justified in terms of spending more on fuel.

I personally wouldn't touch a D4D with a barge pole, purely because if you have injector issues or engine trouble it is big $$$ to fix, this may be a low risk for a serviced vehicle, however I would always be worried. I would be buying the 1kz diesel or the petrol depending on what year you want. The 1kz diesel stopped in 2006 so anything newer I would personally buy a petrol.

Dont let my comments tarnish the D4D's, a lot of people have them and love them, however a lot have issues.

Everyone says they won't go bush bashing and won't tow, but in reality down the track this may change! It is an addictive hobby!!!

      Good luck

The d4d is a great motor.... But if I had my time again I'd go v6 again, depends on what you want to do with it. I'm always paranoid about my injectors, and making sure I get clean fuel. But with my 90 series v6 I just used the servo with the cheapest fuel

I only ever looked at getting a diesel because I wanted to go great distances without refuelling or carrying extra fuel jerry cans, and I had a similar dilemma. I opted for a very well serviced, and low mileage older model, because I didn't like the idea of the D4D having expensive issues, although I would like to point out that it is only a very tiny number of D4Ds that have had serious issues, it's just they are very serious and 5 figure sum repair bills... something I was not prepared to put up with. It took me nearly 2 years to find the perfect car, it was well worth the wait.

All engines can have issues, it's a machine at the end of the day.

I go along with prado2004 for me the 1kz is a top motor, I spoke to a person from Toyota who said the 1kz was detuned for longer life, its still a great tow vehicle at 96kw for the d4d they also have trouble with water in the fuel pump same as the injectors are very costly to repair, how long will a d4d motor last time will tell.

i'm following this closely as me and the Mrs want a Prado - i'm doing initial investigating now what the 90 series / 95? 100 - 105 - 120 series are all about.

my mrs loves the look of the 120's she won't be seen dead in a 90 series (i believe with the "square" tail lights) but i'm only new to looking, & researching these prado's my self so at thei stage if it comes down to a 90/95 series with far lower k's and reliable motor and such for cheap then she'll just have to have some concrete and harden up and drive one. however as i stated doing research it appears that 120's in petrol seem to be hardy and reliable even up through the 400,000k's mark ? would some one buy a rig with such high kilometres? this will be our first toyota, been Suzuki fans for ever so as i said new expierence for everything...

can i ask though no one has really bought up any other diesle engines or rigs before the D4D ??? are there no early model diesles worth talking about ?

The D4D is designated the 1KD. Previous to that was the 1KZ. This was installed in the 90 and 120 series. The 90 series is actually the SWB version that is sole elsewhere in the world. The 95 series is the LWB version that was sold in Aus. For some reason, the 95 is commonly referred to as the 90.

We have a petrol with extractors and exhaust and it sounds so meaty. I just love it. I'm not a fan of the "truck" sound of the diesel.
Like you we'll likely never tow anything.
2007 GXL V6 - ARB Bullbar with LED lights, snorkel, extractors, 2 1/4" dual exhaust, K&N filter, dimpled/slotted rotors, headrest dvd players, Ebay Satnav/reverse camera, GME 3100TX, Tigerz11 Side awning on custom brackets with Maxtrax mounts, 300W Invertor, ARB Underbody protection, Lightbar and STZ 265/70 tyres.
Wish list in order I'll get them: Sliders, 2" lift, E-locker, Winch bar with winch.

I bought a 2005 VX V6 120 last year with 160k kms. I took my time and waited for the right vehicle. I walked away from a lot of "I need this gone!" "Must sell!" ("at my asking price") vehicles. Its funny how many sellers don't see how these two options don't go together.

I was all set to buy a diesel until I was advised to crunch the numbers and not bother unless its for towing, with lots of loaded up miles. The petrol works out cheaper to buy and run.

I very nearly bought a 2006 120 V6 GXL with over 400k kms on the clock. The log book was meticulously filled in, with detailed notes and receipts for all the services & repairs after that. Asking price was $13k. Then the 2005 VX popped up with $10k of bits attached for slightly more than $20k.

Work out what you want it for. Then drive lots of them. Don't be in a hurry.

Definitely the D4D if you are doing any towing or long touring. mine gets abused doing short trips and is still fine.

The older diesel has a lot less power.
                          Petrol costs too much.

The D4D injector issues were fixed in 2008 I believe and even then aren't as common as the skeptics make you believe.

I probably wont buy a Grande again, but will consider an Altitude or VX without air bag rear suspension, but that's only because whatever I get I want maximum lift. May well be an SR5 D4D Lux.

I will never go back to Petrol unless its a GT-R or Bugatti.

Dan..what you trying to say..??. The KZ's are great little engines, but as I'll possibly never tow I do sort of wish I'd bought a V6. You pay more for the diesels but they have a higher resale value too if kept good so it really comes down to fuel and consumption etc. Take your time.

Putting on a bar and snorkel initially. got a great price compared to a lot around. Heres hoping - plus I got 2years warranty from Toyota dealer!
Again thanks for the feedback I really appreciate the variance and the diversity of responses
