  • Fuel gauge issues

    Hi,
Have a strange problem, went to check out the Billy Goat Bluff Track, got out of Melbourne Friday afternoon, arrived to Black Snake Creek camp site at night. Unfortunately it was raining on Friday and most of the Saturday but we gave it a try anyway, about half way up we drove into a fog, so we had no views at the top. It was a tough ride up in the wet, do not think I would make it without difflocks. Was not keen to go back down, so we took the Castle Hill Track – McDonalds Gap Track – Reedy Creek Track – Budgee Track back to Dargo Road and to Dargo Hotel for dinner. Was bit muddy and slippery, but good fun.

Sorry about the long introduction, but the problem was as follows: When I got into the pub I had half a tank (I was approaching half point, where the fuel gage switches to 90L mode), when I got out the fuel gage showed empty and was at 90l mode. My first thought was, my fuel must have leaked through a hole in a tank ( I did hit few rocks going up the track). But there was no diesel to be found under the car. Then, crap somebody stole my fuel!!! Are we in Romania (apologies to any Romanians, but I have been there and seen it) or what? Cannot believe this, surely that is not what happened!! Then, I thought maybe the gauge is just gone awol, but bit strange I thought.

Anyway we had a choice, assume that the gauge is wrong and drive back to the camp, hoping we still have half a tank (or run out of fuel in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night). Or stay and wait for the petrol station to open in the morning and put some fuel in to see if the gauge works or not, so we decided for the latter. Roughed it out in the car, and in the morning put in 30 litres of fuel – gauge still showing empty. Great!!, nobody stole my fuel, it has not leaked, gauge just does not work. Weather got better too, the sky cleared up, so we decided to go up the Billy Goat Bluff Track again, and have some views. Going up was much easier this time, since the track dried up and the rocks were not slippery. Views were amazing, and the we drove back to Melbourne through Licola. All this on empty fuel tank

So my questions is, anybody had this problem before? What should I look into? The gauge shows empty and sits in 90 l mode.

    Thanks

Mine did the same (08 GX Diesel) traced the problem to a broken wire in the plug that connects to the top of the fuel tank under the passenger side. Found by accident as the tank started to leak around the O ring where the sender is. Unplugging the plug at the tank I found the wire had corroded off the pin (maybe helped by the diesel leak???).

Pulled the pin out carefully from the plug, resolded the wire to the pin and hey-presto, working gauge again. You can get to the plug if you whip out the rear seat on the passenger side, remove the plastic trim around the rear door and step beside the seat, pull back the carpet and you will see the inspection cover to get to the tank.

          I think i have a similar problem..

Just bought my 2004 Prado and since I've had it I haven't been able to make ends of the fuel level. To try and figure it out, I ran until the tank showed near empty (fuel light came on, but then went off again??), so I put 85L in it, somehow it bumps up and over the 90L and registers half full on reserve.. Then we only make it about 100km on half of the reserve.

Get back in the car, and it's saying full at 90L mark. After a couple of days driving to work I'm now at almost 3/4 after just 250km. Makes no sense to me... might have to get in and check the plug etc as Skip suggested.

Chris not sure if Im reading your description properly but it sounds about right but just in case are your not aware of how the gauge actually works. When you fill both tanks the gauge will be showing full no green light. When the gauge drops to about half or just under it will flick back up to full and the green light will come on .This indicates you are on your last 90Litres of fuel, the gauge will then actually go all the way down to empty and normally sit just above empty (about a mill with mine) the low fuel light will light up and you need fuel no more in reserve. 250k using only 1/4 of the tank ?? technically means you would get 250k per 1/4 a tank meaning you will get 1000k from that tank till your showing empty ?? Presume when your saying 3/4 you mean 1/4 from the top of the gauge....Cheers Steve

              Hi Steve,

That makes much more sense.. thank you!!

The assumption I made was that the fuel gauge went all the way down to empty on reserve (I didn't see it). So I thought that somehow I'd used half the reserve and got nowhere. But if it switches at half, I must have put in just enough fuel to trip over to the aux tank. Then that switched and I've used about 1/3 of the full tank (sorry I see where the confusion is).

So - you're dead right. I've used about 1/3 of a tank (maybe a bit over) and done about 325km. That sounds more like it.

Thanks for helping me out with that!

I have a different issue - but not serious. I normally keep my fuel tanks full. In the habit of every Sunday filling up and recording data. On two recent trips got down to the 90l limit with light on an d still drove another 100kms. When I came to fill up it only took 86 litres.

I have the same problem with my 2003 120 Petrol V6. I had driven about 100km after my 90l light came on. I jumped in my car the next morning and the tank was showing empty/ light on (I park on about a 3-5% slope - if that matters). It did not rise from empty as I drove to the servo.

Rather than fill it to see how much I could squeeze in to test what was going on, I just added 20 litres. This pushed the gauge from empty back up to full (90 litre light on).

I am about to go on a three month trip and think my wife is going to be a bit stressed when I say, "oh yeh, the empty fuel light comes on when we have 400km range left". Basically that means we are going to have to gauge our fuel use from the odo, which sucks, and could get us into trouble if we have variation in consumption due to conditions.

Hoping someone has a solution/suggestion which does not involve me soldering my fuel tank ;-). The gauge does not seem to be disconnected, just mis-reading. The gauge also seems to work from 180l down to 90l as expected.

                  Thanks.

I will fill my tank (both) tomorrow and see if that makes the empty go away, but it seems exactly the same problem as you had Barney. I have not driven the car since, so I am not sure what is going on, but I guess I will see tomorrow.

Hey fellow "queenslander" you could pick up the multifunction clock display from a grande and put it in easy job. This will give you a fairly accurate distance to empty figure. I'm chasing one from a wreckers myself at the moment to give a try. Here's a thread on it http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...nction-Display

Same story here, the gauge is on empty with the amber light on, I filled up till petrol was spilling out the top of the filler so I know the tank is full.
I accessed the wiring connector above the fuel tank under the rear seat but all was clean and intact. I removed the dash instrument cluster and heck the wiring there but is was also intact. I think I have covered the "Easy Fixes".
I am thinking of opening the screw cap port on top of the tank to see what is under that and whether that is where the problem lies.

Not necessarily an answer to your issue but the tanks are not 2 x 90l. They are 1 x 87l & 1 x 93l. Sorry can't remember which is which though.

                              "Primary"/"Front" tank is 87l and "Reserve"/"Secondary" tank is 93l

Just as a point of interest, I put in 150l on my last fill.

You folks with Diesel (sorry can't help with Petrol), there are a couple of things to look for:

                              1) Between tank filter - when was it changed? - It is underbody, between the two tanks, just slightly off center of driveshaft
                              2) Can you hear the tank pump? There is a pump on the rear tank to pump into the main, as that is where diesel is drawn from.
