Just Bought a 120 GXL - what's next?

Hey all - I take delivery of a 2003 Diesel (1KZ-TE) Prado Tomorrow morning. 5 Speed manual, 130K km's fully serviced.

Its pretty bog standard with only roof racks and tow bar added so I get to make it mine by building it up the way I want it.

What my question is, where do I start. What are some of the most important tasks I should look at first.

From my reading here and with what I want to achieve this is what I have come up with so far (Its going to be used for travel with the Jayco CT)

Immediately
Oil Change
Filter change
Brake Controller
Rear Power connector

Soon to do
Water trap (Terrain Tamer) with water sensor alert
Catch Can (I believe that I can block off the EGR, but a catch can is probably better)
Interior air filter (the one behind the glove box).

Down the track - Just the usual
Bull bar
Snorkel
Suspension
Lights
Air Compressor
Tyres (all terrain)

Is there anything I have not come across yet that I should check out / attend to immediately.

1. Get a good credit card :-)

Nice choice.
Change glow plugs.
Check front diff mount brackets, they were superseded 11/03.
If not then best change them.

in general maintenance, check all your breaks / pads /disks / hand breaks.

also check / change your i assume that these vechicles have the same thing as the petty engines, check your fuel filter / diesle filter? for fuel may be worth while if it's easy to get to ( in the rigs i have had in the past they are easy to get to and such)

I agree to Abraxix to check your breaking system for your family and yourself safety. If you are going to tow and travel good rotors like DBR sloted and bendix pads that I learned to this forum, I recomended. I am new to this Prado Points and members help me a lot to thier post. I am now in the process of installing auxillary battery to my 2004 TD3 Prado for your future rig.

Your Prado is the same vintage as mine with very similar km's. I've done, with help, auto transmission change; F&R diffs & transfer box. Front needs changing about every 40,000k's as it's small. Change oil filter and engine oil @ every5K. Keep the air filter clean and change accordingly!! Changed power steering too.

Your spot on the money though. I got a mechanic (friends of #######) to strip my throttle body and MAF sensor and boy were they cruddy. You have to do this important step first. After it was all put back together, a 1L catch can was installed to stop the crud from going back into the intake. I'll post some pics up on the appropriate threads. No need to block the EGR, a catch can is far better! The difference it made was unbelievable although I do have an aftermarket exhaust. Clean/empty C. Can @every 40K?

After these necessities, you can add on what large items you want and like ####### says change your glow plugs too! If you look after these engines (i.e catch cans etc) to save the engine from crud they will go for years. Mine goes so much better now compared to when I first bought it. Why Toyota don't have some kind of DPF in Australia I don't know. I'm sure the Europeans have far stricter environmental policies.

Picked up the new Prado on Tuesday morning and parked it in the shed and left for Wombeyan caves straight away (I did not even drive it home) and I have just logged back on to read the comments.

I will look into all the stuff mentioned here. I knew nothing about the suspension issues, so a bit to learn there.

(un)fortunately, the credit card limit is quite high so I need to be careful. The handbrake loves the Prado and is asking for a snorkel for Christmas (she got a snorkel for the 92 Hilux for her birthday 15 odd years ago).
