    • Well I did the "monthly" test of the winch. It started OK but slowed as it rolled out then stopped. What a pain to manually roll back in. So I undid the motor and about 500mL black oily water cane out. Then took it off the bullbar and opened it up. This is what I found -

Probably explains why it stopped. I then cleaned it up and gave it to my son. He dismanteled it and sadly the main shaft had also snapped, so I'm up for a new one.

      • So then I decided it was time to rotate the tyres. I thought htere are a couple of 35's sitting around so fitted them. -

        Before -

        After

Sadly the 35's are pretty much worn down to 33's but it gives the idea.

Yes, bathing in warm water full of stinky people who haven't showered in days and used bush toilets. The bacteria count there would be high enough to have the place declared a biohazard area.

That's a bit harsh, MLC. There's a fair flow of water there. I think it beats many of the NZ hot springs, especially the South Island ones that do have a very low flow. IMO Dalhousie Springs are one of the great attractions on the Simpson Crossing.

Unfortunatley I am going the other way - Dalhousie is at the start.. We are doing Maree, Oodnadatta, Alice, Batton Hill, Hay River Track, Birdsville, Innamincka.. So do we wash before we go to Birdville pub, or after?

Putting my brand new Pioneer tray on this weekend so that will be the first major point of trip preparation done

Hmm luck of the draw? We took one look around and decided there must have been a joint day release program from Alice Springs between the jail and the homeless hostel. I understand there are fish that eat dead skin etc there, but even they must have been poisoned that day. I had to be a feral gathering of some sort. Anyway, don't let me put you off, do it by it means. We just kept going through to Purnie Bore I think it is.

                      • Yes it is a worry what some people do, and how they leave a place. Sadly Purnie Bore is a bit hot to swim in, but they do have a hot shower. The pool around the bore is quite picturesque. The bird life is quite good there as well.

That's a dilemma you got there, catch 22 really.
The answer is probably both ;-)

                            Great trip, enjoy!
