  • Rotated all 5 wheels yesterday, inspecting the rubber on each of the MT ATZ's. Lots of shrapnel like stones wedged tightly in all the little slots of the rubber to remove... Apart from the disappointment of the excess chipping of the lugs on my ATZ's, the overall wear is not too badClick image for larger version

    • You need one of those Swiss Army knives with the tool to remove stones from horses hooves. And new tyres.

Craig i have the same issue, I look after my tyre pressures but mine are badly chipped. (i do use them for their intended purpose but)
They have worn ok, but very susceptible to chipping, so much so i probably wont get them again.

                • Happened yesterday

You picked a fine time to leave me Loose Wheel (sung to Kenny Rogers song).

Was rather disconcerting to feel the left back all of a sudden to drop down. First thought, blown tire and then Sue said "oh look is that our wheel".

It rolled down the left side of the road along the barrier and dropped into a ditch.

This happen on the M1 just past exit 93 northbound at 1445. Car is now at the towing company's holding yard till Monday and then off to the panel beaters.

When we found 2 of the wheel nuts, it looked like they were stripped out on the first 4-6 threads. Could they have been started wrong and then put on with a rattle gun.

Apart from that we had a great time at Rover Park for the previous 5 days. Played reasonably hard.

                  Cheers

Did you use the same nuts with the OE steel wheels? Are they OE alloys?

The nuts in this pic look wrong for alloys, they don't appear to have the washer.

                      • Ouch, glad everyone's ok and it happened at the end of your trip. Sounds like you had a blast. Has happened to me a few times when I was young and it's never good when you get overtaken by one of your wheels. Got me into the practice of checking the wheel nuts before after and during trips and also insisting that my wheels are hand tightened not done up with a rattle gun. Last time they used a rattle gun I snapped a wheel brace trying to undo the nuts they were so tight....

                        • Hi Guys

The wheels are Speedy Grande. The wheel nuts are 60deg taper and came with the wheels.

The wheel nuts were done by the mob that supplied the wheels. (Not naming names as further investigation is happening.)

I did not checked the torque setting(my bad) on the wheels prior to going on holidays.

Luckly both Sue and myself are OK, jsut a bit shaken up. (Not really a good time to be on day 5 of no smoking)

                          Cheers

                          • That's a bad start to your holidays but good that all got out without injury as we know these things can cause horrible consequences. Highly unusual to loose all 6 nuts in one go. Do you have all 6 nuts or are they scattered along the highway for miles? There would most likely be damage to the area around the lug holes. The nuts don't look right as D4D has said above. There would have been some driveline vibrations before it departed.

                            • Got under the rig to remove the OEM bash plates to clean up a bit of oil I spilled while taking off the fuel filter, ended up having a bit of a look around down there and came across this little guy. Can anyone tell me exactly what it is called and it's function? It has lines to the fuel tank so I'm guessing it's some sort of heat exchange? Just in front of the transfer case on passenger side.

Also, tried greasing the driveshaft at all grease nipple points. However, some of the nipples are blocked. Any tips on how to clean these while they are still attached? Looks like a tricky job to remove them to clean them or is that my only option?

Hmmm ok, they still don't look right to me, not enough surface area for the clamping force.

BTW that's a lot of weights on that spare. Are they all like that?
