  • I have just added this note to the Current Affairs website as a request to do a story.

I will do the same on Today Tonight on Tuesday.

    Toyota Negligence

Toyota Prado 120 series owners experiencing cracked dashboards from 2003 to 2009. The key issue here is that the cracking of the dashboard is also over the airbag. This is a safety issue and potentially can lead to a fatality if not deployed correctly. There is plenty of information for people out there as if the airbag needs to deploy it could cause serious injuries to the person due to the dashpad splintering and been lodged in the eye of the passengers possibly even the driver.

It is noted that all the Prados with cracked dashes over the airbag would not be passed in any state vehicle inspection. It is an issue, but Toyota are not doing a recall and they are dealing with individual owners on a case by case basis. As most vehicles are out of warranty, Toyota still has an obligation to deal with a major safety issue. Airbags are mandatory on passenger vehicles, their deployment is expected to be safe. To replace a dash inclusive of labour is almost $3000.

There is also a major Toyota owners web site called Prado Point, that can provide additional information regarding posts and well as comments on Cars Guide.

Well, there's your problem. I'd crack up too if I had to move to Melbourne from sunny Queensland!

          • Ok just got the call from Martin Jonkers Toyota - new dash for my 2004 is on order. It is going to cost me a little over $500 on my part for labour and 25% of the cost of the dash itself. Toyota paying 75% of the dash in this instance. So I am happy with that outcome.

A silly question to all taht are replacing the adsh board with new, what warrenty do you have that the new dashboard will not crack again and that it does not made of the same sh...ty material??

              • My bet there is absolutely no difference (like the head in the 1kz diesels) and in 5 or so years you will be seeing the same thing again. The only difference i suppose is you would be more wary of it and probably cover the screen more then you do now (even in winter) and keep a dash mat on there, but even with dash mats from new they still crack. In general just shit material used and hopefully the couple of posts back had contacted A Current Affairs and Today Tonight so hopefully will lead to a better outcome for some... Seems to be a bit like a chook raffle as to wether or not different dealers will go all out and try and help others just give a straight out no ?? Luck of the draw as they say, seems to be that way..........Cheers Steve

When I had my dash replaced, I was told there was 12 month warranty on the new part. Big deal they only start to crack after about 5 to 6 years so the warranty is not worth the paper it is written on.
Here we go again in about 4 years time!!! (I hope not)

                  • OK Checked this morning and there's no crack yet! In saying that mines a late 2008 Grande that have just passed the warrenty period. look like i'll go through this fight with TMC in about 2-3 years time!! i so hope not having to.

Getting a secondhand dashboard mat from a PP member this weekend. Maybe i'll forget all bout it once the mat is on.

All the best to all with this problem.

I am about 90% certain toyota changed the material the dash was made from in late 2006 (Model year 2007 - onwards). Thus you (and I) should be OK...

                      fingers crossed...

                          • Hello every one I am new in this forum.
Please include my 2003 grande in the list of cracked dashboard.
I bought it 9months ago 2nd hand from a dealership. I will bring it back to the dealership where i bought it and hopefully they will rectify the problem.
BTW I came across ACCC repairs, replace and refund policy webpages:
                            http://www.accc.gov.au/content/index.../itemId/854467
                            http://www.accc.gov.au/content/index...itemId/1023610
Not so sure if these links were mentioned already but still I just want to share and hopefully some or most of us can use.

                            • Sorry Wilson but I doubt you will have any good luck with the dealer. Unless you got some special warranty with the prado they only have to offer you 3 months or/and 5000k warranty. But worth a try anyway. If the cracks were there when you bought it then you may be lucky as from what I have heard its ilegal for there to be cracks over the airbag so they have sold you an unroad worthy car ?? Probably worth finding out 100% for sure first via the RTA or maybe some one that does pink or blue slips if this comment about cracks over airbag or not is an issue, but only if its cracked over the passengers side airbag, other wise think you will be out of luck.......Cheers Steve

                              • Dealer finally got back to me with pricing. 50% on parts and 6hrs to fit @ $120/hr ! Apparently it is 4.5 hours on the books but they are quoting 6hrs max to cover their butts in case it does take that long because they have never done one before. I told them I don't want to be the guinea pig and have to pay 6hrs when the next person after me is going to pay less.
