    I read that as long as an issue was was identified within the warranty period, that issue must be rectified by the manufacturer. If the same issue occurs once the warranty has lapsed then the manufacturer must still resolve the issue. Now, obviously if you kill your greabox and get it repaired under warranty then do it a second time after the warranty has lapsed, you don't have a leg to stand on. This only applies where it is apparent the original fault was not rectified properly. Just something to think about and check if this applies to you with a call to fair trading or the equivalent in your state.

      Holds true in SA.

      If you get them to investigate any issue/rattle/squeek etc at a service and they fob you off saying it's "Normal" just make sure it gets noted on your service sheet in case it develops into a bigger problem outside the warranty period.
      If your going to flex your consumer rights muscles then you need evidence in writing. Consumer Affairs can't help much without written evidence... he said/she said doesn't count.

        ....also where a manufacturing defect has been identified within a large population, then the manufacturer cannot fob you off. Hence the reason for "recalls".
        At this stage with less than a dozen guys having the problem I doubt it would stand a "Recall".

          The Prado I mentioned earlier in the thread, a mining vehicle that had been modded for rough going with a dual spare tyre rack and beefed suspension. You can bet your bottom dollar that the vehicle had seen it's share of corrugations. Thought at the time maybe the dash had rattled itself into that state. It would be interesting to note the past usage of the vehicles with this problem. Does this occur with blacktop use only? Or has everybody with this problem given the Prado a bit of stick at times. Would it occur simply by letting the dashboard stew in the hot oz sun over a long time? It may very well given previous comments about the oils coming out of the materials when hot.

            The cracks are only in the vinyl covering on the dash. I think they are only superficial and aren't an indication of any other damage. I recently serviced mine and there were no indications of any other significant wear on the vehicle at all.

            I am of the opinion that the cracks in mine have been caused by exposure to heat and sun. I now have a dashmat and the cracks do not seem to have spread.

            I live at Bloomfield and drive on the Bloomfield track to Cairns or on Bloomfield Road to Cooktown. There is about 40 kilometres of dirt in both directions. We would travel to Cooktown once a week and to Cairns once a month. It is hardly what I would call treacherous.

            The vehicle was being kept in a three bay - closed garage made of colourbond when the cracks first appeared. The only times it was being exposed to hot sun was during a shopping trip to Cooktown.

            It's got me stumped but it is giving me the @#%&!

              You can add me to that list, 2003 GXL with at least 3 cracks, the worst one goes from the air vent in the middle over to the passenger door (ie across the whole bit in front of the passenger). I wonder if we can all do a petition and send it to Toyota? At the moment I wouldn't buy another Prado, my son's 97 Hilux 2WD seems better built than my Prado.

                      Same problem on my 04 GXL guys. Could insurance be an option?

                        i recently brought an 04 gxl from some close friends. it's only done 75 000 kms and 74 950 of that has been done on the black stuff and my dash is cracked from every vent and corner. a dash mat has been fitted and i don't think it is getting any worse, mainly cos i don't think it could.

                        i don't think this is good enough from toyota.

                          Just noticed mine has a crack on the dash from the passenger aircon vent over the airbag to the other side. 03 GXL TD must be something in the 03's

                              OK, We have a problem with dashboard cracks, Although I do not have any cracks, I have a 05 GXL and looking at that list it seems to me that "time wise" I may be getting close to having a problem, has anyone got any surefire fixes to PREVENT cracking.
                              I use Meguiars Natural Shine but I am open to any suggestions.

                                I think there is definitely a trend and it doesn't look good for the 03/04 Prados out there. So far mine has no cracks but this thread has alerted me to a possible problem down the track and I will give the dash a little more attention from now on.:roll:
