  • Hi my prado has cracks as well. it is 2004 grande. I am the second owner. Toyota dealer said it is not covered by warranty and quoted 4000 to replace it. After reading this forum I am wondering if replacing is really going to fix the problem.? Any one who has replaced the dash can give us some idea whether they are happy and the rough costs please.

    • Your getting screwed big time if they quoted you $4000, no way on gods earth would I be paying that. Maybe over your way but here the average seems to be about $1500 to just over two grand....... Cheers Steve

      • Hey guys jeez its been about 2 years since I posted.
I have a 2004 GXL I take great pride in its interior and I didnt have a mark on the dash in all these years.
I started a new job and had to hand back my work car so I got the Prado out from under its blanket in the shed to use for work
in sept last year. By end of october I noticed a small crack on the passenger side and by december was over the whole
dash. Cant explain why its taken so many years but I dont like looking at them so at christmas I bought a new dashboard
from Toyota and I am happy again.
        Martin.king $4000 is a rip off
it is a big install but it was around $1200 for a new dashfrom Toyota Sydney and about $400 labour
        hope this helps
        cheers

          • Well no cracks at this stage on a 2004 GXL. That could mean the previous owner had the dash mat on from close to day one.
You watch, now that I've said something my good mate Murphy will make an appearance.

            • Cracks left hand side of dash below dash above glove box

              Afternoon,
This is where my cracks are and car dealer says airbag is popped and referred to small white tags at floor level where the seat belts are fixed down inside both door pillars Referred to white tags on both sides as justification of his view However there is no enlarging/bulging of dash on the left just the cracks and no enlarging on the steering wheel central pad which made me think the cracks are just what they are - cracks They are more than just hairline cracks Say about 1 mm wide Any thoughts please

                • Mate, if your airbag popped (passengers side) you would know about it.....great big hole in the dash, possibly smashed windscreen as well....plus drivers bag would go off as well.

Having replaced my dash panel last week, it took me a total of 2.5 hours. Hour to remove, 30 minutes to transfer the locating pins, brackets, side vents and small harness across and another hour to put back. Easiest dash swap I ever did. Only fiddly bit was the airbag assembly to the steel bracket support bolt ! as it is not clearly marked in the diagram + make a note where the HVAC control cables go on the driver's side. Having a second person makes it easier to put back as the airbag end is fairly heavy. Having plastic trim removal tools makes it easier. 10/12mm 1/4" long socket + phillips #2 screwdriver, 1/2" 19mm for the steering wheel and you are good to go. Disconnect the battery first !!!

Trade price on the dash assembly is around $940. Definately worth DIY-ing it, makes the car look thousand times better.......

                    Hope that helps....

Thanks Selaga, that at least gives us a rough idea of the price, not a bad discount for trade. 2.5 hours is relatively quick I thought it would have been a massive job so have been putting it off. I have a 2003 Grande with cracks all over the dash and would love to change it over.

Does anybody know if the replacement dash Toyota is selling is made of a different material that won't crack? I would hate to go to all the trouble of changing it and it crack again!!

                      • My dash in my 08 prado is pristine, I do run a dash Matt and recently only just started using a windscreen shade. Took my dashmat off today to give everything a good going over. I'm guessing they might have changed the composition in the later models

Hey mate, Toyota changed all my soft touch dash 2 years ago and still like new!!They are really the same material but the dealer said its coming better quality than the previous one.Mine cracked in 2011 or 2012, so it took 7 or 8 years...now is like new but mine cracked ALL parts, i couldnt drive like that...here in Brazil lots of old owners had the same issue, in my case after complaining on websites, they called me and then....changed for free, here the cost would be around 2000 dollars for the dash plus hand labor...

                            • Have not been on here for a while, so update on my dash. Prado spends most of its time in the garage but have noticed in the last couple of months the dash is really starting to crack up bad. Vehicle is 2003 and clocked 109k today on the way back from the towbar recall.
Across the passenger airbag now has another crack appearing from the left vent.
Right side vent now has multiple cracks and across the top it stretches from passenger to drivers side.
Across the front of the instrument panel has also gone - so basically the dash looks like a road map/
Got in touch with Toyota and went through the process drop in photos taken blah blah.

Sorry no longer covered blah blah. Cost to replace including labour $1600.

So will I purchase another Toyota NOT BLOODY LIKELY. I will buy a new dash and fit it myself
Looking at this page with 313,000 views and 54pages long and 809 contributions - Toyota obviously do not give a toss about us the people that buy and represent the brand.
So I will take my business elsewhere................................
