  • Re: Cracked dashboard

    Hi All,

Just to let you all know what it costs (my service TAX invoice) from Toyota for the replacement of my cracked dash so that you can decide for yourselves whether you are getting a good deal on replacing it. Mine was fixed under an extended warranty so cost me nothing.

Part number TO55401600927-C0 Pad sub-assy. Unit price $1615.00, total labour $495, GST $211 so total invoice $2321.00

They did a great job, no squeaks or rubbing anywhere and smells like new again. Came with the same recommendations of garaging, dash mat, treatments for interiors, no extremes of temperatures or sudden temperature shifts! (Don't you love the last one?) The service rep. had no answer for why it happened in the first place but had had 3 Prados the week I took mine in with cracked dashes. Don't know the others outcome..

I wonder if in 5 -6 years time it will do the same again??!!
You're here for a good time, not a long time... Love my Prado...

      I agree pearlie
Will it happen again in 5-6 years time? Who knows? But I think it is very dissapointing that these dashtops should 'crack' up after a very short period of time (very conveniently out of warranty) and one of the worlds biggest manufacturers of motor vehicles should just wipe their hands of the situation saying its 'not a manufacturing problem'. What really pi$$es me off is that I am left with a unroadworthy and (in their own words) dangerous vehicle through no fault of my own. Just like their recalls of vehicles worldwide the plead innocent and ignorant of the problem until somebody is killed. The only difference here is that (fortunately) no-one yet has been injured because of this problem (cracking around airbag).
This is a shame as I think they are a fantastic vehicle, but it has left a very sour taste in my mouth.
It would be interesting to hear from the owners of earlier series Prados to see how their dashtops are holding up.
I only hope others that have the same problem as us log it with Toyota Aust and they finally realise this is a manufacturing problem with 120 series Prado's and we get some reinbersment for our costs.
      I wont hold my breath!!!!

If Toyota (both the dealer and Cust. Assist) insist this is severe enough to render the vehicle unroadworthy, unsafe and warrant immediate replacement that is significant! Particularly when so many are now know to be affected by the cracking issue. Others have cracking in the same area and for those of us who have the cracking elsewhere it can be safely assumed there is a significant liklihood that this will eventuate as well in future. To me this is a SIGNIFICANT safety issue for Toyota.

I had an interesting phone call with a senior Qld Transport Dept. official today who was extremely interested in this situation and appeared to appreciate the potential significance of the issue. He promptly sent me the appropriate Australian Transport Safety Bureau documentation so the matter can be considered without delay.

Graeme... if you give me a call we can discuss further. I have sent you an email.

As for my inspection by my local dealer. No surprises there... yes, there's cracking... Toyota Warranty Dept. said no!

Good - now I can take the gloves off and go to town on this! Drafted my story to A Current Affair already. About to draft my letter to the Chairman of Toyota Australia. Will also be bringing all the details to the attention of other media sources; filing an official complaint with the Qld Office of Fair Trading; speaking with a solicitor specialising in consumer law and intend to drag Toyota's proverbial before a Magistrate.

Needless to say I've not heard back from Toyota's Customer Experience team!

Fuel tank problem, drive shaft issue, peeling steering wheel, cracking dashboard - I've had them all (just waiting for the rear diff to crap itself now)... all conveniently out of warranty and dismissed by Toyota. I think my next 4wd will be a Pajero. :?

          Hi wannawodka2
Looking foward to talking to you. Yeah - I think I'm not the flavour of the month at 'customer assist' myself. Last time I was talking to them it felt like I was talking to a refrigerator. As soon as I get your contact details I'll give you a call. I think its best we talk over the phone than on here. They (Customer assist) told me at first they dont look at forums but later told me they had seen my posts. Sounds like they tell a few porkies. Surprise surprise.

Surprise, surprise - Toyota knocked my warranty claim back for a new dashboard. I'm now ready to pursue this to whatever level I can as it's disgusting that they treat their customers in this way. We have 3 Toyotas in our family currently and as soon as I can get rid of them all I will. Unless of course they take their heads out of their arses and do the right thing!

I've been conversing with Holly from Toyota but getting nowhere.

Can't we all get together to take action against Toyota? if there's a cost involved and we divide it between us it would be well worthwhile

Received the same call this morning from local Toyota dealer advising out of warranty claim has been denied and that there is nothing more they can do. Guess it falls in line with the warranty managers comment upon inspection last week of 'dont hold your breath' which really instilled me with confidence. Grrrr.

Don't give up, a number of us have been communicating and we will be taking action against Toyota.
Can anyone who is interested in helping taking action please add there name to this list?
The more people who complain the better the chance of something being done. If we give up Toyota will have won.

Personally, I can't believe how much time Toyota have spent avoiding this issue! Can't wait to see how much time they spend sitting in the lobby of a Magistrate's court waiting for an inevitable spanking if they don't man up and and take some corporate responsibility for this tragic situation. I believe it can be successfully argued that Toyota are VERY WELL aware of this issue and the moment someone is subjected to a passenger airbag deployment in an affected vehicle it will take an eternity for Toyota Motor Corporation Australia (at least) to recover!

Yes... I know full well the Toyota Experience Team check this forum You are on notice!

WE have been told ours is "unsafe"
