  • How Long Do You Keep Your Prado

    Hi All,

I have a 2009 GXL D4D auto 120 series and my lease finishes in a few months and I am trying to decide if I should keep the Prado or move on.

My Prado currently has 120,000kms on the clock, it has had the injector washers replaced at 80,000kms and at my last serivce I had the injector values checked and they were all good.

I also have the oil analysed by the guy who looks after our equipment at work and everything is perfect.

It is a great car does everything I want and has all the good mods, bullbar, sliders , lift kit, dual batteries, etc

Do I keep it or move on?

    Please help my brain hurts

Been through the same thing recently. I can't find anything worthwhile to replace my 120 with that would be a worthy upgrade so I'm keeping it. The '08/'09 120s are the pick of the bunch.

That said I'd upgrade to a 200 series in a heartbeat however a modded 200 is too high for most CBD car parks, which is an issue for me.

If money were no problem then I would jump into a 200 series tomorrow, even though the 120 is only just over 4 years old. However given my money tree hasn't started producing $100 bills at this point I reckon the 120 will be around until its at least 10 years old.

In reality it does all I ask of it in style and comfort, just that the horsepower of the 200 would be nice every once in a while.

      Cheers Andrew

Agree on 10 years. That was the plan when I bought it, and it is only 4 years away now, might have to extend it to 15 years unless something as good or better than a 2008 D4D comes up by then.

Yea I would keep it, you know what's been done to it, still has low Kay's, and ofcourse the 120 is the pick of them. Like the other lads, I would love a 200series but for now I am happy to keep my 120

I've never been one for chopping in vehicles just because they reach some arbitrary milestone. Sales types would have you "updating" every five minutes. It all depends on your use and circumstances. I know people with "old" 90's that are happy to keep using them because it just doesn't make sense to move on. I will be keeping my 2005 120 for some years to come.

My 05 is still a young pup.Its only got 135,000km on her so she will be with me for many more years to come.
Unless i win Tatts then i can get the 200 series

                Hi,

For me theres nothing like a new car and the fun of modifying it, so I would change it if you can. IMO a 150 is better than a 120 is better than a 90 and it goes on. Once Ive had a car a few years and the mods are done its time to move on.

That would have to be the most expensive way there is to own vehicles. I modify to get use out of the mods and use the vehicle. Each to their own.

Just because its "new" or the next model, doesn't mean its better.

Typically 4-5 years. I try to sell them at the point where they are still worth something, and not too far out of warranty. Getting any work that involves opening things up post warranty can be very costly given I'm too time poor to do it myself these days.
It also depends upon what is on offer in the new marketplace at the time as well, say if I want another Prado, but it is almost end of life for the current model, that may make me wait a further 6-12 months.

I'm not a bush basher, so I don't do all the off-road mods therefore I don't have the cost of doing them all again on the next one, because we all know you get little back for what you spent on mods.

When we bought our 120 new in Dec 2008 the thought was to keep it for 6 years. Now we are coming up to 6 years and only 95,000km and quite frankly the 150 doesn't do it for me there is no reason to update. Admittedly I was seriously considering selling it and taking a car allowance from work and buying a Ranger and modifying that for touring but the maths didn't work out.
I love our 120 but more importantly so does the wife.

If you look on carpoint, you will see that D4D 120's are holding their value very well thank you, especially low mileage later years. No need to rush about selling perfectly good vehicles and pumping money into car salesmen's pockets.

If the Prado is wearing out through high usage, then sure, turn it over. 120,000km is nowhere near worn out btw.

I'm keeping my 120 as long as I can. Happy to spend good money on updating parts as required, if needed. It is a classic model in my view.

                            Hi,

They are advertised on Car point at that price, doesn't mean they are selling at those prices? When i bought my 150 there were lost around second hand but they wanted way too much even a friend offered there immaculate 2011 model with only 40000 alms for 50k - wtf, I bought my GXL for less than 60k brand new.

My 2004 will have its 10th birthday this year and has ticked over 165,000kms.

I've owned it for 5 years and 85,000km, and intend owning for the same again. Enjoy driving it in the city, touring the countryside and playing in it when the opportunity presents itself. Have only just got it set-up how I like it so it would be a shame to sell it for the sake of upgrading, when it does everything I want it to do.
