With only 40K on my new engine, and 112K on the clock, I don't see the point of selling it for the sake of something new whilst it does everything I want it to do. With retirement in just under 5 years I might need a new toy then.

I reckon I'll keep ours until it starts falling apart! So long as the motor doesn't blow up, then maybe I'll go for a petrol 120.
This is my first ever(and probably my last) new car. I can't see the value in buying a new one when you can save thousands on a low km one.
      Can't we just keep travelling?

True, you can expect to pay less than the advertised price, but even if you take 5-10k off the advertised prices, they are still holding very good value. And I don't think you'd get $10k off any of them...

Trade-in price is obviously less than those prices unless the dealer is doing a fiddle. Best bet is to keep the 120 until it has outlived it's usefulness rather than trade for a new model for no real benefit.

        Shiny new doesn't last long!

          Thanks all,

I agree with alot of the comments made, if I go for a new car it won't be a 150 series Prado as I want to get something with a minimum 3 tonne towing as the could be a caravan upgrade in a few years time.

The only thing for me that fits the bill at the moment is a Isuzu Dmax, it is not a massive ute and can fit in my garage. I had a test drive during the week, it was a nice car but it is not as nice as my Prado.

Replacement car has to be under $60K or under.

TBH new is too nice to be taking offroad and getting scratched and full of mud etc underneath. I'd never buy a new 4WD, I'd be too scared of wrecking it. We plan on keeping our '07 Petrol GXL for years but we only bought it last year
2007 GXL V6 - ARB Bullbar with LED lights, snorkel, extractors, 2 1/4" dual exhaust, K&N filter, dimpled/slotted rotors, headrest dvd players, Ebay Satnav/reverse camera, GME 3100TX, Tigerz11 Side awning on custom brackets with Maxtrax mounts, 300W Invertor, ARB Underbody protection, Lightbar and STZ 265/70 tyres.
Wish list in order I'll get them: Sliders, 2" lift, E-locker, Winch bar with winch.

I kept my 120 for 10 years. Sold it last week for 50% of what I paid in 2004.
I'm pretty happy that this was the right strategy for me.

There you go. Evidence that you don't have to worry about your Prado resale crashing after a couple of years.

I see there is much love for the 120 Series! I've got the 150, and while I reakon the 120 is a better looking rig and love that it has the 8 seats, I wouldn't want one after owning my 150. It's a lot more quiet and better on the juice.
That said, you wouldn't necessarily upgrade just for a quieter and cheaper to run vehicle. The outlay means you are paying more interest (either in borrowed money or spent money that no longer earns interest). That interest money is petrol money.
The 120 is more noisy, but it's not like the 150 is silent! I bought a 150 because I wanted to get into a Prado, but for the age and KM I wanted, they were not a lot cheaper than the new ones. On top of that, I use it for work, this has big tax implications - which for me are substantial. These would not be as significant on a used Prado. All new Toyotas also have fixed price servicing for the first 6 services ($210 for diesel Prado). This was certainly an advantage over second hand, but again, not a deal breaker either way. The last reason I bought new was I didn't want to buy into someone else's vehicle problems. If you have owned your vehicle since new - you know the history and this isn't as much of an issue. Unless, of course, you do have big issues - then perhaps that is a big reason to upgrade.
Not sure if any of that is helpful, but good luck either way!

Well to be fair, we don't know if it was optioned up, how many KM it had done and it's general condition. But it is fair to say Prados are renown for their high resale value. They have the lowest depreciation of ANY vehicle in Australia. That is saying something! I'm surprised so many people buy Jeeps given their horrendous depreciation. People obviously have more to lose than I do!

The old saying "Penny wise Pound fool" comes to mind So many things in this world people will buy cheap on multiple occasions rather than quality once, but that's progress for you.

When I bought my Prado 10yrs ago I planned on $3k/annum depreciation - straight line for the term of my ownership.

At the time there was no early years depreciation hit because there was an 8 month wait for a new car to be delivered. If you didn’t want to wait you had to try the second hand market for a car – which was limited because a) the 120s had only been out for a year; and b) why would you want to sell it???
2nd had cars were going for new car prices. A true seller’s market.

….fast forward to 2014, I sell the car and the actual depreciation calculates to approx. $2.8k pa (nominal) over ten years.

Why the low rate of depreciation? Because a 10 year old Prado is a bloody good car!!
....on the other hand, a 10yr old jeep …..

My Plan was to keep the Prado as long as it was reliable. It turned out that was 153k kms. D4destruction holed No:1 piston. Toyota fixed it under extended warranty /good will, then it was sayonara.

Whoa! Same piston!!!!! Coincidence? Is it a coincidence that its piston 1, holed, we are both very intelligent, good looking and respected? I THINK NOT!
