Yes, I am biased but I think you will find a dealer rate to be closer to $100 an hour. Ours is $80 and I know of a few quite a bit more. Without going into a discussion into who touched your car IMHO the labour shortage creates higher costs as it costs more to keep workers worth keeping. The point I would pick is that I think you'll find book service time to be about 1.4 hours or so, so get your rate from that? Sorry if this is too off topic. And yes, it is your money so feel free to do as you please.

Yes, Ok Matt it seems you speak from experience which is fair enough, and I respect that. You must forgive me though, as I think $100.00 an hour for a vehicle service is excessive. I know business consultants that do not receive a rate that high. Maybe if you wanted actual repair work done by professionals then that rate would be closer to the mark. However, I'm not a mechanic and it seems you are so you would know better than me. But as a paying owner, I find $100.00 an hour excessive. Still, you charge what people are willing to pay, and I suppose enough people do not question the service costs at all. So the system works.

Is more going on at each service than I realize? $100.00 an hour to change the oil filter, replace oil and check drive belts just seems too much to me. All listed "checks" similarly do not sound particularly involved as does the greasing routine. Am I wrong about this?

Your point that the labour shortage is driving driving skilled pay rates higher though is a good one. I experience this even at my own job in local Govt. The flipside to that though, is that unskilled labour is now beginning to creep into many businesses to fill skilled positions. We, the paying public are still asked to pay the same for comparatively unskilled labour.

If I throw a cylinder through my garage roof I have absolutely no qualms at all about paying a skilled mechanic the required rate to fix the problem. Likewise troubleshooting difficult problems that require skill and experience to solve. Simple routine servicing though is entirely another matter.

At the risk of becoming a terrorist hijacker, I'd better stop there.

Futher to what MattWhite wrote above re owner manual allows 1.4 hours for service and divide that into the labour cost, I used this example to my dealers service department once to justify their labour charge and their reply was "you try and complete it in that time because we can't" which also reminds me a mate worked in a Toyota dealership as a mechanic and they had an incentive program that for arguement sake a service allowed 3.0 hours and they completed it in 2.0 hours the mechanic got a pay bonus of 50% of the time save so in this case 30mins extra pay.

          Hi Folks
I've done a bit of phoning around Brisbane Toyota dealers prior to warranty services and have found Downtown Toyota at Morningside the cheapest quote. Pleasant and profesional to deal with AND they then take 15% off the cost of parts and services for RACQ membership. I saved over $70 on my D4D 20000k service compared with the dealer closest to home.
          Cheers
