  • What spares to carry for a Kimberley Trip?

    G'day all,

I'm thinking of getting into one of the spare parts mobs tomorrow (supercheap etc) to stock up on some spares for a 3 month Kimberley trip next year. They're all having a sale tomorrow so it's probably time to stock up.

I'm a 4wding rookie. The father in law is coming with us and he has the mechanical brain.

Ours is a 2008 Diesel Standard model. It will have about 140k by the time we use it and it will have a service just before we leave. We'll stick to the well worn track visiting some fishing spots along the way.

Just wondering what spare parts/maintenance I should carry.

I don't want to waste money, but also don't want to limp around if I could have carried spare. An insight would be appreciated.

    Cheers
    Marc

I'm not sure if supercheap would be the place to go for spares, but, the usual spare shocks; air & fuel filters, etc would be a good start, but as i said, not sure if supercheap is the place for those items...

with your vehicle being a 2008 model, b4 I went up that way I would be having my injectors checked and get the feed back values, etc. There's heaps of info on that topic on PP.....

Tyre puncher repair kit; Duck or Racing Tape, etc, etc

not much help i know, but it's start..... I'm sure there will be others come along with more/better info

Thanks Rob_macca67. I'll have a search about the feed back values. Do people recommend purchasing certain air and fuel filter replacements? I had planned to just walk into Repco. But should I be walking into Toyota instead? What else, air, fuel, belts? I am going to grab a heap of fuses etc. My father in law has most of the tools but he's bringing an older cruiser so I'll need to be self sufficient with the spares. I can bring some spare suspension as I'll be upgrading mine soon.

As Rob has said above I don't think supercheap is the place for those spares, I would be looking at genuine for filters and belts/hoses. However I would get from supercheap your fluids - engine and transmission/gearbox oil, a small bottle of brake fluid etc. With gearbox oil and brake fluid I wouldn't be too concerned about matching the specs 100% if you can't but as close as you can. The idea of these spares is to get you out of trouble and you can do a full flush and replacement when back in civilisation if you use them.
From supercheap or similar get some spare fuses, electrical connections, wire and tools to fit them, duct tape, cable ties, WD40,

With your service before you go try to go to a reputable 4WD mechanic and get a pre trip service/inspection instead of Toyota or Ultratune etc. You might pay a bit more for this type os service but the country you are traversing can be unforgivable.

A shovel, Tyre repair kit, good Tyre guage and good compressor, snatch strap and rated shackles would be a good start

If you get belts and hoses replaced at your service keep the old ones for your spares.
Consider some metal epoxy like kneed it I think it is called, a small tube of silastic and a windscreen repair kit, could stop a small chip or crack getting bigger. Hand cleaner, rags disposable gloves. If you have the room and weight only take your old rear shocks for spares

If you do a search on the forum you should find a ton of info on remote touring and spare parts and tools.

I did 11000kms from Darwin to the Kimberly's, Perth, Ceduna, Ayres Rock then Darwin towing a camper trailer. Things that came in handy was a air compressor for inflating tyres. I aired them down to 25psi in the morning when travelling on the rough roads to Mitchell Falls from the Gibb River Rd turn-off. Max speed was 80-90km. I was able to monitor tyre temp and pressures with my TPMS.
Other things that came in handy was zip ties when my radiator bash plate cover lost a couple of bolts. I also had to adjust my trailer bearings twice (they were new). The Toyota jack fits nicely inside the high lift jack base plate I got from ARB which is good for sand and mud.

Window cleaner and a few rags. I had heaps of other stuff but just remember if you get stuck and need to be recovered it will cost up to $7000 in the far NTH of WA as other people found out from down STH.

Good thinking guys. I'll take everything on board that you've said except the Sat phone is only a maybe. A mate will carry a personal epirb for walks etc. Good idea about the spare belts etc from the service. Also, hadn't thought about the windscreen repair kit. Even the hand cleaner was an oversight. I'll get to Toyota for the filters. Thanks for the advice. I'm writing a list. Any other thoughts are welcome. They're all about 20% off now, so might as well pull the wallet out now

You may want to think about changing the timing belt also as would be close to being due during trip
If you have a two-way a spare aerial is handy - I broke 3 two on the way to Mitchell Falls
Spare nuts and bolts of various sizes. If you have a bullbar check mounting bolts each night as they can tend to come loose
A 2mx2m tarp was also handy to lay on whilst checking underneath vehicle each day

The advise I saw on 4WD TV was to carry the least amount of weight in spares. This is to reduce the weight burden on car, roof rack and or trailer.

I will still carry too much but will slow down accordingly. We carry spare front and rear shocks, alternator, brake pads, oil, belt, hoses and clamps, torque wrenches, grease gun, spare trailer bearings, grease, etc.
maybe need to look at this myself.

140K? Have you replaced the injectors yet? If not, get them done plus both fuel filters and you've already reduced the potential for trip disaster by 50%.

I heard a story once of a bloke who used to carry a spare diff for his land rover because it used to break every time he went across the desert. Didn't have one ready one time so took the chance, turns out the extra weight of the spare diff caused the diff to break. Don't know how much truth is in that story, but it's something to think about. A spare belt, hoses, rescue tape, 100mph tape, silicone, windscreen repair kit, tyre repair kit, tarp, some clear thick plastic (heavy duty type plastic bag plastic) to tape in place of a broken window, a small bottle of each fluid and some tools, that's my standard repair/spares kit. Remember to keep it light and that will help prevent the failures from happening, as will good pre and POST trip maintenance.

Good tyres are a must, Wyndham 35.6 degrees average temp every day of the year.
On the bitumen that will be 45 degrees or more, plus a lot of gravel and a bit of 4wd and you really do want some good shoes under your feet.
Another one is a block of wood with a routered out piece for you jack to sit in. Have seen too many times where a factory bottle jack just doesn't have the clearance to remove and replace a tyre, especially on a bit of uneven ground.
Don't rush things. You see a lot of people doing 100km or more on gravel roads to get above the corrugations. All your doing is shaking your car apart.
Slow down, correct tyre pressure and enjoy the scenery
                          Have a good trip

Take both fuel filters , I had water in the fuel and replacement filters could have taken a week to get there . Cheers Ross

Yeah, we'll definitely get the timing belt done before we leave. A mate skimped on a timing belt change on one of his cars and the poor bugger is probably still working over time to pay for the tows and repairs. Hadn't thought of a spare aerial. I may chance that one. Bought some spares from Toyota and Repco. Of interest, some of the genuine parts were cheaper. I didn't get the 2nd fuel filter but if I have to wait 7 days somewhere for a spare, I'd better just pack one. Good thinking about the lay down tarp. I still need to visit the right places for a window repair kit. This trip is getting real. Just need to cough up the big bucks for the suspension and tyres. Keep the ideas coming guys. As I said, I'm a rookie and need to learn fast.
