  • To sell V6 auto AND buy manual diesel 2008

    Hi there gang ,

wondering if i could get your thoughts on whether its worthwile pros/cons of both options to Buy a 2008 Manual Diesel by selling mine and restarting the build . Ive seen a few in ythe high $37 selling and afew in the hight $37-30 so in theory i could get a close chage over (similar KM)
    My reasons :
    Km per tank :
I get about 1200km on the 180lt in the petrol would assume closer to 2000km in the diesel )
The guys I drive with are diesel 150 series Fuel - commonality and range ARE primary reason for doing so .
I Like the Manual this is the first Auto i've owned :
I have looked at Askorto http://automatictransmission.com.au and they have a solution that gives the same engine retardation on descent as a manual so I don’t lose there.

Wanted some advice if you have time BEFORE I put a Lift on the vehicle for another $1800 and $1500 for the Lockup kit

I know there are posts that talk auto v manual or petrol V diesel I just have not seen one that covers changing both so appreciate your feedback

    Cheers
    Nige

If you are referring to there valve body kits for the auto to help slow you down on hill descents then DONT waste your money.
I had it done and there is almost no difference to standard.

      i have a 2008 diesel 6 speed
with grandtracks no rack, lifted suspension, arb bar driving as freugal as possible i got around 1650km from 175L
and i live outside the city, so dont get too much in stop start

fit allterain tyres and you will drop a bit more
a reasonable distance will 1450 to 1500km per tank if you use it right down

with the roof rack, awning etc 1300 to 1350km unless you drop the speed down

      towing a alloy 5.75m boat around 1250km
      towing the camper around 1300km

the factory clutch is Ok, but if your towing you will want a HD

they have oodles of power, just the flat spot to get off the mark quick

i haven't driven an auto prado, but a pedal box will help as will any auto tweaks

dont know where you got 2000km from ( i wish )

i am still on the factory injectors ( only 80k, but will change shortly) but my car isnt used for the stop start short run shopping trolly)

what is it that you dont like about the car you have ???
what is in the new car that isnt in yours ???????

I've got a 2008 diesel with 2" lift, roof bars, awning, bullbar. I'm getting around 12l/100km so 1300-1500 on a tank depending in town/country miles. 2000 is a dream figure.

Once you load up with a lift, bigger tyres, bullbar, awning, roof rack, draws etc, it all adds weight and wind resistance and you see your economy suffer.
But as a guide i ran my 120 d4d auto before it had any of it stuff on it from Melbourne to Brisbane up the pacific highway on a single (full to the brim) 180litre tank which was just under 1800km.
            Very happy with that.

            Cheers

The main things i don't like are the surging on the auto in cruise and the much lower economy when i towed compared to my Diesel mates . If i could fix the auto surging and have a little more control on that i'd probably be happy . I was getting 13.5 per 100 on the way home from QLd . Sorry for the lack of knowledge but what is a pedal box . Is it along the lines of remapping teh Auo program ??

Also the new car i wold but would be stock and hopefully about 10k less that i would sell mine for so i could put what i have onto that new vehicle It would just be a Manual and diesel

After i had the valve body kit put in it did improve the cruise control by 50%
When i use the lockup switch it also improves it as well.
If you do a search someone here has put a post about installing a lockup switch real cheap. That might help with the cruise ?

                      Hey,

Factor in the potential piston holing/injector/head/block cracking issues with CRD engines and the big associated rebuild expenses, and I would be sticking with the 1GR-FE, a much more reliable engine that you will likely get more km's out of than the diesel before it goes bang.

You've got no idea what condition the D4D you're buying will be in, and it's a big potentially expensive gamble.

If you're doing long distance driving and worried about range, get some jerry cans.

I've driven across Australia twice, Simpson etc. with a petrol V6 auto, and I would never change it for a diesel, not ever!

20c worth from a petrol auto owner!

                      Best

Do the sums. How much petrol can you buy for the $2500 new injectors will cost you at 100000 or so km with petrol 10 c per litre or so cheaper than diesel. Also what proportion of your km will be towing? If not much then petrol is even more attractive. Also the auto kills the manual in sand. Horses for courses.

+1 on the auto in the sand, it is brilliant!
