My dealer want me to bring it back at 4000kms for it's first service (just a check over, oil & filter change), which is free.

ChrisD, the free check over doesn't include an oil/filter change. Just an inspection.

Midge, are you sure about that?

I'm yet to have mine, though the sales guy did explain that they put a different oil in the new car and replace it at its first service. Well that was the salesman, and what do they know about servicing... usually nothing.

I'll probably go in for my complimentary service this coming week or early next.

Yep, they reckon there's no need for an oil change before 10k on new engines. Mind you, if you your dealer told you that was part of the deal, I'd hold him to it!

first of all if you love your prado

get it service by someone you know ! or recommended ! I dont like toyota servicing department been to a few different toyota its always an issue s and a nightmare I mean you never get to speak to the mechanic who did the job , 2 its mostly done by apprentice , 3 I have had rrear handbrake drums incorrectly installed and fixed it myself even through i,m not a trained mechanic !! Just using common sense !!

regarding about Oil its kinda true they have special addictives for new engines and then a again toyota oil is not the same as buying at joints like super cheap and repco etc apartly they have there special oil blend from the refinery using Castrol oil with special addictives more like 15 w to 40 w symnastic oil !! anyway my point is go to a local garage who you can actually talk to !use good 15 to 40 w oil blend as well let the engine cool down before turing off (turbo cooks the oil etc) oh yeah also be light on the throttle on the last few ks to the destination and with my d4d i give it an oil change every 7500 !!

General Rule !!
usually if you are driving in very hot climate and hard driving , dustry, dirt roads etc I would recommended oil change every 5000ks and if you are just cruising to city and / or nice cool climate then you could approach 10,000ks before oil change ! at the end of the day if you are worried you can actually get 1 litre of your used oil and send it to the lab for testing they give brilliant information and would also recommend what time frame for future oil change providing you using the same oil type on another note, doesn't cost much I think it cost me around $65 !

I recommended it especially if you love your prado !!

I've had my prado for 2 years and only just realised that I have been paying heaps to Toyota for basically an oil-change every 5000km.

I have decided to do my own oil-changes every 5000km, and get it properly serviced every 10,000km from a mechanic I have known for years.

If I could have the last 2 years back I would be a lot richer :?

Simmo, I used to think the same thing but have you compared the cost? I get charged about $100 for the 5000km oil change which might sound like alot for an oil change. However, I used to do the same on my Pajero myself, and it cost me $45 for oil and $35 or so for the filter.

Maybe Prado filters are cheaper, but for $20 or so I am quite happy taking it to Toyota to let them get dirty and spill oil on their floor rather than mine.

That's the way I see it, maybe I'm just lazy!

Take your point Midge. I might do some more detailed costing. The other side of all this is I have a 12 year old son who is getting keen on cars so the 5000km oil change in the garage is a good way to show him what (little) I do know ops:

40k Service

Just going through my 40000km Toyota service paperwork and I note I've been charged $31.50 + GST for LSD Gear Oil LSX90. As it's a Grande I thought I didn't have a LSD and traction control did the work. I've also been charged for Manual Gearbox Oil VMX80 $14.70 + GST and I also thought the auto box is sealed. What else would they use it for ? I do understand that the front and rear diff oils were changed but is LSD Oil the right way to go.

which means the actual service was $350.75

I too saw the $2.06 for washer additive, and only saw it after I got home. Had just filled it the day before I took it in.

I'm a wood duck with mechanical but perhaps the break up was
$49.75 Car EFI service
$19.20 under "Petrols, oils, lubricants and supplies"

Is this EFI service necessary every 20000kms or just a money making sale they talked me into?

hi all,
(1) thing only USE diesel injector cleaners in diesels ,
suggust using TOYOTA diesel conditioner every 2 refills of
about 180ml for full tanks (10ml per 10litres ) as per toyota!
not expensive about $20 for a 500ml can ,get from toyota spare parts
I have used it for a long time though work and for myself!
(2) suggust using petrol injector cleaner, toyota makes it also, it comes
in a little WHITE bottle, which is very good!!!! only use (1) bottle per year.
They only suggests 1 because if you use to many in a year it may result in fuel line damage in rubber hoses!
Yes I do work for a Toyota dealer in brisbane, but if I did I think this stuff
worked I would not use it on my own vehicles or recommend using it.

G'day.
The LSD oil can be used in non limited slip diffs. Is often even recommended in some heavier duty applications.
The Manual Gearbox oil was probably used in your transfer case.

Sorry don't work for Toyota. Just used to do my own oil and fluid changes on my JEEP due to the ridiculous Jeep dealership charges. I used to save about $250 by doing it myself!

For those in Brisbane.... I use Pearson Automotive. Used to work at Toyota... and the boss has a new HiLux....

Just got 50K service - Sci Fleet at Taringa - $280, Pearson - $200.
