  • Need help!! ABS, TRC, Engine lights all on after airbags blew out

Hi everyone, newbie to the forum. I recently did a trip up the duck creek rd to orielly's last week in my 04 Grande , long story short, i decided to take one of the side tracks, blew both of the rear airbags and had to limp all the way home to south brizzy.... on the bump stops:cry:

When this happened all the mentioned lights came on, ABS, TRC OFF, Engine light etc. I cannot see any pulled abs wires and i have disconnected the battery to try and reset the computer.. to no avail

Anyone able to point me in the right direction?

Did you disconnect it for a decent amount of time? I'd leave it overnight.

If that doesn't work then you'll need a scan tool like a scangauge or I think Supercheap auto will read the codes and remove them at a reasonable price.

Never used them but just saw it advertised when I was in there last.

Scangauge isn't compatible on the earlier 120s. Sounds like the sensors may have been damaged or the wires.

What the heel did you do? I've been on all those tracks in everything from a Forester/Patrol/Navara/Prado and not even so much as lifted a wheel?! Do tell!

Must've been tackling tracks with the height control set to high. The airbags (especially if old and worn) will be more susceptible to failure. We've seen this occur before. Please do tell us what happened and how spleenbuster

It was one of the side tracks near the very end at the top, branches off to the right, easy to climb up but the return to the main track was a fairly rutted out drop down. Then one after the other POP!!!! PSSSSSTT

I did the whole main track without 4x4 difflock engaged, until the side track attempt, when i pushed the button i noticed that the TRC off and vsc lights came on, then yes I set the suspension to high for more clearence. I completed the the track and then 10 seconds later the left air bag blew....Bummer. Started to limp it home then about 3 mins later the right bag blew out...Then noticed the ABS light, warning light, vsc, trc off etc.

On the bright side, full suspension upgrade done , Bilsteins all round, airbagman upgrade and heavy duty kings in the front ready for the winch bar. Also when i removed the rear shocks (previous owner fitted EFS Elites) they were a good 2-3 inches longer than the Bilsteins, this may have contributed to the failure...

Ring a bell Craigm??? Mine (LHS) went at 10 years (like yours) exactly the same way. I forgot to turn the high height off on a previous clearance but with the diesel engine I did not hear a thing. If it wasn't for Leon I'd I've kept going! You were lucky to get 10 years out of them. On inspection of the RHS one, the rubber was badly perished and about to go as well. They both could have gone for a few more years on the highway but I did not buy a 4wd for that??

Surely your lights are on because there is no air in the bags so the sensors are reading an error? Until they are fixed the lights will remain on?? Your options are OE bags from Toyota; amayama or some UAE mob ( I forgot the link). Or aftermarket like airbagman (x2 versions: one for lifted and one standard). Lots of threads on these so you'll have to make your own decision. Price range goes from @$400 -$900 depending on where/ what you get. Good onya for getting out there and doing stuff!!! Ta.

So i took it to southside toyota near the Gabba, and wait for it....was suprised with the price and service. They stuffed around with it for 2 or so hours, found quite a few fault codes, tried to reset them, temporarily fitted new sensors to fault find and only charged me 75 bucks...

List of fault codes found = CO215 LHR wheel sensor fault, C1223 ABS control system malfunction, C1725 damping control fault RHF, C1728 damping control fault LHF, C1727 damping control fault RHR, C1728 damping control fault LHR, last but not least C1751 continous current to compressor.

The compressor code was erased and never came back and the damping control faults must be the electronic shock absorbers that i disconnected due to fitting my bilsteins, not sure if they will put up lights on the dash though. Maybe someone could shed some light on that?

Anyway, looks like the main culprit is the rear left abs sensor wire as they replaced that sensor and it still thew fault codes at them.
