  • What are the odds my dad just stuffed his prado?

It's a 2003 Grande, it was in PERFECT condition when they got it, 130,000k's, garaged it's whole life, absolutely looked new. Anyway he was never really happy with it for some insane unknown reason, I think he thinks it's "too big" for him.. which makes no sense because it's smaller than my hilux!

Anyway, today he and my mum set off with their small A-Van caravan. They called me at a town about 30 kilometers from where they left, because the "Diff lock light is on" and the "VSC" light also. When they pressed the center diff lock light it just flashed.

After talking to them I figured out dad had the 4wd selector in LOW, and he had been driving along at about 80-90 in Low range, towing a caravan, on sealed roads..

I've tried to get him to read the book before, and I've also previously explained it to him, but he just hasn't ever bothered to take an interest again because he 'just doesn't like it'. I got him to put it back into High and the lights have gone off. He really has no clue.

They seem to be driving OK now, but I can't check it all out till they're back next week. Do you think he's caused any damage? Maybe just caused some unnecessary wear? Is it strange the VSC and Center diff lock lights were on ( I believe the center diff locks automatically in low range, so that's probably why that light was on)? I'm guessing he overheated the gearbox? I've read the book but it's not my car so I've only driven it a few times.

andy...keeping it brief as others know a lot more...as you can press the centre diff button, you can naturally manually have it 'on' or 'off' in low range....it's not automatically on all the time as you mention. I struggle to believe one could achieve >80kmph in low range, you'd totally cactus the engine. I've gone up to 40kmph in low range and even then the engine was screaming, I forgot to look at the rev limiter but it would have been well over 2500 for a KZ.

Pressing the CD button on turns the VSC off, hence the green VSC light goes on. He possibly has caused some unnecessary wear although more mechanically minded people may be able to help you more..

Yeah it would help if I knew exactly what he did, but he said the 4wd selector was 'in neutral' I thought the car wouldn't move it was in neutral. I think he had it in Low. But not sure.

He has had it in high and simply bumped the CD lock button.
It would have bound tight in u turns etc on bitumen. But if kept relatively straight it won't have done anything.
The flashing is the CD attempting to unlock. Sometimes it takes a bit and reversing a few metres helps.

He would not have been in low above as about 50 kms it would have been screaming.

OK Thanks, but he did say he moved the 4wd stick back into high.. do you guys know, if it's in neutral, does this act as neutral for the entire gearbox or just the transfer?

If it was in Neutral, there wouldn't be any drive.

OK as I thought, but if it wasn't in Low or Nuetral, why did it 'clunk' back into high when he pushed it?

He probably pushed it forward by accident when trying to sort the issue.

                    Please show him this.

                    Dear Dad
                    Your Prado is r$$ted.

You should swap it with your son's car. We will tell him its a good deal.

I would say the odds are pretty low.

As Macroon said, they wouldn't get to 80-90k in low, 40 is about the max, maybe 50 if you absolutely red lined it, but not 80 - 90. If they didn't hear anything go "BANG" and it seems to be driving fine now, then I would be surprised if there is any damage.

                      Cheers Andrew
