shortening gear stick on petrol automatic 120 series

This may be an odd thing to do, but has anyone shortened the length of their gear stick? I personally think that for an automatic, the gear stick doesn't need to be so long, it looks like a manual. Is it easy/possible to make it shorter, and more like an auto gear stick should (in my opinion) be?
