GDay Guys,
I have been thinking of a place to put a HN7 somewhere in my 07 120 series Prado. I have been scared off any of the VMS or Polaris in dash systems, am not technically sound enough to buy a cheap Ebay unit and install Ozi, don't particularly like the idea of buying an iPad/tablet with Hema maps or similar installed and to have it floating around in the car while driving (plus the wife will have to operate it, which she may struggle with), so i have pretty much decided on the HN7 by elimination of all other models plus another number of reasons.
However, i like to be able to see out the whole windscreen and don't want to crowd it with a big 7" screen, which means mounting the HN7 above the clock/temp gauge wouldn't really suit (but will probably end up being my only option).
SOOO, i came up with an idea of where to mount the HN7 where it is out of the driving view of the road and isn't down low near the gear sticks etc.
The idea is to have the unit sitting in behind the steering wheel infront of the speedo and tachometer, use the navigation unit as the speedo and as a reverse camera unit, but still have the engine temp, fuel level etc viewable.
For those in the know (and those that want to voice their opinion) is it legal to have a navigation unit infront of the speedo?
All my searches suggest that legally the speedo needs to be working (which it will be) for the car to be roadworthy. The navigation unit will tell me speed and if the navigation unit drops out for some reason (tunnel) then i can easily remove the unit, allowing me to read the speedo.
Im interested to see responses to the question behind my idea and also other suggestions to others that have the same requirements as myself. Im also aware that some people are going to tell me to harden up and just stick the HN7 on the dash or to simply go with something else, but i would like to obviously consider all options first.
Thanks
Scott
