  • Sat Nav placed infront of Speedo?? Is that legal?

    GDay Guys,
I have been thinking of a place to put a HN7 somewhere in my 07 120 series Prado. I have been scared off any of the VMS or Polaris in dash systems, am not technically sound enough to buy a cheap Ebay unit and install Ozi, don't particularly like the idea of buying an iPad/tablet with Hema maps or similar installed and to have it floating around in the car while driving (plus the wife will have to operate it, which she may struggle with), so i have pretty much decided on the HN7 by elimination of all other models plus another number of reasons.

However, i like to be able to see out the whole windscreen and don't want to crowd it with a big 7" screen, which means mounting the HN7 above the clock/temp gauge wouldn't really suit (but will probably end up being my only option).

SOOO, i came up with an idea of where to mount the HN7 where it is out of the driving view of the road and isn't down low near the gear sticks etc.

The idea is to have the unit sitting in behind the steering wheel infront of the speedo and tachometer, use the navigation unit as the speedo and as a reverse camera unit, but still have the engine temp, fuel level etc viewable.
For those in the know (and those that want to voice their opinion) is it legal to have a navigation unit infront of the speedo?
All my searches suggest that legally the speedo needs to be working (which it will be) for the car to be roadworthy. The navigation unit will tell me speed and if the navigation unit drops out for some reason (tunnel) then i can easily remove the unit, allowing me to read the speedo.

Im interested to see responses to the question behind my idea and also other suggestions to others that have the same requirements as myself. Im also aware that some people are going to tell me to harden up and just stick the HN7 on the dash or to simply go with something else, but i would like to obviously consider all options first.

    Thanks
    Scott

I think come the day you have a copper walk up and tap on your window just for an RBT and licence check you may have a very hard time once he notices your setup, be even harder if his just nabbed you for a few km over the speed limit too. I know our gps devices etc are probably more accurate then the standard speedo, but I think its just an argument waiting to happen with the boys in blue.

I have my tablet set up so it simply velcros to the back of the sunvisor, very simple to attach and remove once your at your destination etc and its just the right size and doesnt protrude any further then the visor and is quiet easily flicked up out of the way

Speeding may not be the biggest issue, but missing warning lights - especially the check engine light - might be.

So obviously the set up needs to be temporary which means the actual unit will be removed if i do get pulled over and the mounts will stay (i doubt the policeman is going to look right into behind the steering wheel and understand what the mounts are for).

It is a good point you make Bushbasher, I might just need to be wary of checking behind the screen every so often perhaps every time we have a driving break.

So does anyone have an idea about the legalities of it, or could refer me to the relevant documentation?

May I suggest an alternative?I use my iPhone as my navigator. I have my iPhone mounted in front of the drivers left vent using the ClicOn centre mount:

          http://www.holdmyphone.com.au/mounts...html?mode=grid

They also make a Hema Navigator mount adaptor.

          http://www.holdmyphone.com.au/holder...navigator.html

Below windscreen line, easy to operate. Doesn't block any instruments and perfectly legal. Doesn't really affect the vents, not that I've noticed. Keeps the phone cool . The Hema might cover the audio controls though? You can rotate the devices easily.

            Short answer is No

            ADR 18/02.
Speedometer is a visual Indicator under ADR's

18.4.1.1 All ‘Visual Indicators’ other than indicator lamps must be ‘Totally Visible’ when viewed from each pair of eye positions located by the ‘95th Percentile Eye Ellipses

18.5. The speedometer must be installed so that its indication is readily visible to the driver when seated in the normal driving position.

Well there you go...thanks mate!!! Thanks for the short and the long answer and for the suggestion..i will definately look into that option as it caters for everything i want and can essentially be permanently mounted and wired in.

Or try the very bottom right hand corner of the windscreen.
