  • Re mapping engine

    hi guys,
We just done a trip from Perth to Darwin and back and lots of places in between ,a lot of dirt roads too away for 9 weeks towing a caravan, van is 1800 kg dry, tandem axle full van ,so with 2 batteries 2 gas bottles 150 / 180 lts of water all provisions food beer wine beer beer clothes some storage on the back of the van tools etc , I suppose the van weighed about 2300 / 2400 kgs and full diesel tanks when ever we filled up ,
I have a 2006 1kz with now 210,000 ks on , a 3 inch exhaust no chip , car never missed a beat , on long climes it struggled a bit but on the whole it was great, towed at 85 / 95 /100 often higher when overtaking fuel consumption for just about 10,000 on the nose ( 9997 ) was 17.4 lts per 100 ks and I'm very happy with that.
I started to add chemtec diesel power to my fuel at about 7000 ks ago , put it in at every fill up, another 1kz owner recommended it and I must say it seems to have improved the engine response , never had anything done to injectors or motor apart from 3 inch Manta exhaust.oil and filter I do at 5000, and auto trans cooler fitted.

I heared on our travels about re mapping engines to better and more up to date settings , the people I spoke to about this were all more than happy with this re mapping / re tuning but never came across it for the Prado, that is my question I suppose , anybody any info on this re mapping as against a chip, I think it's around the $ 1000 mark but much kinder on the motor than chiping and for economy ????.
    Thanks for any info.

With your 3" exhaust, getting a good tune is probably a great next step.

I don't know about the West Coast, but I do know that a place called Berrima Diesel Centre over this side specialise in this type of work. Dunno what you think, but I would perhaps try giving them a call to see if they "know" of anyone over your way that can do it. Not sure on cost, however.

Stanmiko, thanks for that only home a few days so I suppose I should give the diesel boys a ring soon, still unpacking and cleaning will keep informed on my progress,

I had a guy "re-program" the ECU for my fuel injected Ford V8. He installed a chip onto the Ford motherboard inside the ECU box. It was necessary to crack (alter) the operating parameters to suit the modified engine and bigger throttle body, etc. Somebody would have to crack the Toyota program by similar means in order to change how everything controlling the engine operates. With almost everything associated with the engine controlled electronically these days there isn't much you can do to change the power/performance without chipping. Even changing cams and turbos needs support from enhanced programming.

Thanks Bushbasher, looks like it might have to be a chip then I will look on web at various chips and make a decision, I was talking to a guy in Shark Bay with a Nissan Patrol 3lt TD and he got a plug in one from France, only cost him $300 well a little less and very happy with it but he did have a lot more knowledge on tuning than I do, hence looking on my favourite sight Pradopoint.
          Cheers Alan.

Mate. The Steinbauer Chip is really the best way to go on the 1KZ engine. I'll run your dilemma thru #### and other very experienced diesel techs when I see them tonight. If you leave it on factory setting with your 3" you should be fine. Very possibly taking it to get Dyno tuned is the next step??

Thanks for input Maca, I have heard the Steinbauer chip was the best option amongst the chips , will await your info , I don't know any diesel people , do my oils and filters myself don't even know of any Dynos around, must get my arse in gear.
              Cheers Alan.
