What should my first Mod be?

I tend to think that if you need to ask on a forum what you should do first, then chances are you shouldn't do anything until you go out and work out what you need.

I know heaps of people, many of them on this forum that have spent a fortune on stuff they don't need or don't know why they have it, but just have to have it because the Jones's have it.

For my first outback trip in my first 120 Prado I had a sovereign roo bar, a UHF and a fridge in the back. Standard Grantrek tyres, standard suspension no dual battery etc. and didn't have an issue.

I have added heaps since that trip over 2 vehicles, but I know why I put each and every mod on, each one was based on experience, and the vast majority I think have been very worthwhile with only a couple of duds.

Just get out and use it and add as you work it out.

Personal EPIRB perhaps? Can be had for 200 bucks these days. Next step above a UHF radio.

As for tyres - stock tyres work great on beach sand (when deflated) and OK-ish inland. Your car is already very capable.

I'm in country WA and have always had Toyota 4WDs for over 25 years now doing 'a lot' of beach driving and tonnes of inland bush camping. To be honest - personally I've never found the need to change to an aggressive treaded tyre and lift my suspension. Having a modified car with a lift kit and massive mud tyres - you may find yourself putting yourself in a situation you may not be experienced in. This is your first 4WD - take your time and go from there. No need to jump in headfirst.

If you're making a big trip across the country and going to run on our huge beaches then I would prioritise safety and comport things first over 'mods'.

As suggested above....... 4WD driving course, good quality air pump and tyre guage. Run tyres around 38psi on tar and 28 psi on dirt [and keep speeds down to around the 80kph mark on these dirt pressures.] Take it from there- snorkel if diesel, all terrain tyres when the other ones wear out; recovery gear....$$$$$$$$. Get out there and enjoy it without spending a fortune then get stuff as you need it.

Thanks guys... Really do appreciate all the input sarcastic or not. Def think I am getting a bit ahead of myself so will settle for a few essential things for now and like said will wait to I say "I really wish I had......" Before even thinking about it.

My advise would be put on defensive things to protect your investment. Bash plates would be a good start.

Make a list of what you would like or think you like. Work out the cost and then buy it when they are on special.

I've got a brand new 3 piece shovel that is still in its protective bag . It's never been used in the 5 years I've owned it . That's the first example of crap that you don't need . Your probably better off asking for examples of rubbish that you don't need .

I would have used my shovel at least 100 times in the last 5 years when traveling, which is why each person needs to work out what suits them.

You and I must be the only people throughout Australia who will dig a hole to crap in. Everywhere I go I see mountains of used dunny paper and human shit along the roadways and parking bays.
