For those who haven't seen it the June overlander magazine has pitted the 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 4wds of the year against each other to see if there was a clear winner overall.

The Range Rover sport, Discovery 3TDV6 SE, 120 D4D auto GXL and 200 GXL D4D were all run together over varied terrain.

Won't spoil it for anyone but some good words in there for 120 owners.

And it proves conculsively size doesn't matter!

nah we didnt see the rangie get bogged, we saw them down near lavis lane and followed them down to the sygna, when they did the standard angle poses and had a play in the dunes.

A bit O/T but I remember back in the early 90's when I was a contract surveyor we were pegging about 5km of gravel road between Warren and Gilgandra and along came about 8 brand spanking fourbys in close convoy.

About 3 months later in Overlander they were the 4x4 of the year testers!

The RR Sport was 4th because of $ and it is less an offroader than the Disco. The 200 was considered not good value for money but was "a mighty offroad performer" let down by on road dynamics and fitout.

"That leaves the value-for-money Prado and Discovery 3. As an overall winner we can't separate these two."

The Prado was criticised for its low towing capacity compared with the others and also the engine performance and on road dynamics. Mind you the two Toyotas were also rated better for their off road ride and the Prado had the best payload. Bear in mind these were all stock standard including grandtreks on the Toyotas, standard suspension etc. The RR really didn't have a chance off the black top as they run 55 profile tyres. The Prado wasn't fitted with the option pack so didn't have traction control which the other three had but still the Prado climbed the test hill with a minimum of fuss and performed better on this section than either of the Landies according to the article. Both Landrovers were lauded for their visibility from the cabin.

Must say it surprised me because I expected the Prado to cop it and the 200 to sweep all before it. A view I didn't hold so this was the last thing I read in the magazine. You see I was going to buy a 200 until I drove one. Great driveline but little else and the thing is vast. Half the time your passengers are in a different postcode! Anyway I ended up with a D4D auto GX with safety packs and couldn't be happier. By my way of thinking I have the GX with all the safety fruit. It has been lifted, has a snorkel, bar, driving lights, AT tyres, compressor, dual batteries etc and I still have enough money left to buy front and rear lockers before I even get close to the cost of a standard Disco 2 TDV6SE or the 200 GXL TD. And I still don't know where the second battery goes in a Disco
