? It's not about feeling good, it's about doing the right thing by the Diesel engine...honestly, after towing and driving in adverse conditions, the toyota recommendation is to do some servicing at shorter intervals, like oil and oil filter after 5,000km, save your money indeed AJ, and some other folk choose to follow some manufacturer recommendations, but it's not some arbitrary feel good decision, is just wise appropriate servicing, that's all.

Saying 5000 kms is pretty arbitrary and I'd like to see the science. Why not 6000 or 7000 etc 5000 is just a nice round number

Based on my experience which included oil sampling I'd be pretty surprised if there was any benefit other than for the oil company in 5000km services.

        Hello boys,
A mate of mine has an Isuzu Dmax 3ltr TD on our trip up north to Darwin and back he took it for its 5000 k service in Broome, the service did not include oil change , oil change is every 20000 ks , needless to say he payed for the oil change,
        Cheers Alan.

The discussion can go on endlessly about service intervals no doubt, in fact it almost has been endless, unfortunately I can't locate done of the original posts that seem to be have been deleted from this forum???
Arbitrary indeed, but not arbitrarily chosen by the owners of the vehicle, so the discussion should be had with toyota, because it is indeed a toyota recommendation when driving in adverse conditions, and so some folk choose to follow what toyota recommend....that's all, even if some call that arbitrary. I recon a few of the most important things you can do for a Diesel engine is clean oil, clean air and clean fuel, but each to his own indeed. What I know is that it really means a lot to a buyer when you sell your car, if you have complete service records and at times that can mean oil changes at shorter intervals....I don't get a mechanic or service centre to do it every 5,000km, that would really add up cost wise, but I drop the oil and do the filters myself, quickly, and simply and it has worked for me. Anyway, that's just what I do, I've decided I personally won't bother with oil testing, I just follow the service schedule reasonably well...

Agree, it's one of those endless arguments. I do agree that oil, fuel and filters are critical, they are the life blood of an engine.

Reminds me of a car that I was looking to buy. It was in immaculate condition but when I checked the dip stick it was like glue. When I asked the owner about this he said 'it runs so well we only ever top up the oil', it had never been serviced in 80000 kms. Feel sorry for whoever bought it.

I dont know if this is totally applicable to a diesel engine but i think it would be.

My mechanic a number of years ago was running a AA modified dragster powered with a lexus v8 topped with a psi super charger. Off the record the lexus is good for about 750 to 800 hp before the block twists under load and cracks down the thru the water jackets when shoving 40 psi up its backside. Then went billet

He rung one of lads in the tech debt over east at a well know green labelled fuel supplier and spoke about engine oil. The long and and the short of that convo was, Aus is a hot country and oils can start to degrade quite early in the piece, 2000 to 300 kms. Partly due to that's what oils do naturally, partly due to our hot climate and this is exacerbated with turbo driven cars where oil degrades more quickly.

The tech recommended generally its a good idea to change oil at round the 5k mark, oil and filter at the 10k mark. Obviously ive read thru the post and ive been doing the above for all my petrol cars for yrs. Ill also do this for the d4d. If can i might get some1 to test the oil to for condition.

The big under bonnet fuel filter I do every 20K and the small fuel filter (mid tanks) each 40k.
I inspect the fuel in the little one each time ... (blow the fuel out into a jar) if it is at all black or sludgey then I have picked up a bug and it will need some additive to knock it on the head.
I use a mini lube to do the tail shaft grease nipples eash 10k or after river crossing or hard trips.
Air filter gets a clean with the compressed air each service and a new on when I think of it. I have two filters for the air con which I wash and alternate when the musty smell gets me going.
Transfer case, difs and gearbox changed about 50-60K (I have full breathers), before the breathers I would check and change after parking it in rivers.
I also now tend to add diesel additive to each fill and believe the injectors are showing better feedback values for it. (Definately less noise when cold)
I also try to remember to check the oil pickup screen (in the sump - look up the drain hole with my phone camera - better that a drip of old oil in the eye) to check the injector seals/sheets are still OK). I am saving the recall notice to use along with new injectors when the feedback number go off)
                You also ask..."
"Is it only a Toyota dealer that has the equipment to hook up to check the correct functionality of injectors?" No!
You need to check out one of the Techstream threads on this site. By buying a cheep usb-OBD2 cable off ebay, and installing (free) Techstream software you can read the car's ECU values, codes and more (including injector feedback values) on your own computer.
Techstream will run on systems from XP to Win10 (sometimes with a bit of fiddling).

Finally I also try to remember to double check the sump plug is tight before I replace my (aftermarket) sump guard. and add new oil. :-)
ps. front dif drain plug can be a real bitch to undo (10mm hex drive is really too small for this size plug)
Finally -- any issues or problems are well covered in various threads on PP... just need to look for them.
                Have fun!

I can't tell the difference between 5000km oil and 10K oil. Both are black and still quite slippery.

Not trying to hijack the thread with off topic info but there are SOME of the things that our friends at Holden thought should be part of "servicing" the vehicle that I purchased from them using 45K of my hard earned doshola over the last seven years.

"Washing" the brand new vehicle at first service without rinsing the dirt and grime off first. Scratched to helle and back duco. Blamed on the apprentice.

Returning the car after a service with a four inch nail hanging out of the tyre wall.(two new rears after I kicked and screamed for four hours.

Screwdriver left under bonnet.12" screwdriver with a bright blue handle is hard to miss apparently. Glad the dude wasn't a surgeon.

Under steering column panel put back in without all the clips. Result. Squeaking noise on every bump during a 1000k trip.

Lying to me about changing parts during services. Work was never done. Refund.

Grease all over my new seats then seats damaged whilst trying to clean said grease off. Two new seats. They were ULTRA pissed at the costs on that one.
And a heap more which are not even worth typing about.

And I thought my service experience was bad when I found 2 loose bolts wedged at the top of motor after driving home from mechanic. My father used to always say to me to check under the bonnet after a service cause as for example it's not unknown for there to be no oil in the engine after a service. I learnt my lesson and sounds like you have too.

Why is there a difference in service interval between, for example, a 2007 D4D Prado at 5000kms intervals in service book and a 2013 D4D in a Hilux at 10000kms intervals in service book? I know the engine is 6 years newer but it's the same engine

                          My 2008 D4d has 10,000 intervals but I service normally every 5,000.

                            The 1KZ were 5,000km intervals.
                            The 1KD/D4D were 10,000km intervals.
