  • More Just got a Prado but......

Ok so here is a second question regarding the drive selector.

    I have a D4D with Auto transmission.

With the selector from HH to HL to N to LL what actions do i need to take when changing down and up. Are there any recommended speeds to work within when changing up or down the transfer cases should i be stopped to change from HL to LL and vice versa etc.

    Thanks in advance

My Wife's future shopping list includes in order a Winch (Most likely a Tigerz), Bash Plates, Rear Bar, Dual Battery setup and a 60l Fridge. And the list gets longer each time we talk about the car.

Can i not do the changes on the fly? I only ask this as with the rodeo that i had i could change between 2H to 4H at up to 100 kph and 4H to 4L up to 40kph and follow the same rules when changing back.

I think the instructions are written on the sunvisor aren't they?

Thanks all for the info so far. Piggy i will check on your tip first thing in the morning. Haven't had the visor down for long enough to notice what was written there.

i think if i recall what the manual said (when i had just bought the car and put it in 4L and couldn't get it out), is that you can go from LL to HL and from HL to HH (or HH to HL) while moving slowly (HH to HL can happen at speed i believe) but to go from HL to LL you need to be stopped...

I've found, in the manual gearbox anyway, that trying to move into LL with any speed, even if you were moving and just stopped recently (i.e. need to allow the gears to stop spinning), that you get a pretty loud grinding of gears noise... and no purchase until everything has had the chance to stop spinning..

for the auto at least you definately need to be in neutral to go into or out of LL, but you can move between HH/HL at speed. I remember doing a gravel-spin recovery course a decade ago (to work on a certain minesite) and we had to shift on the fly to use 4wd to pull out of induced 2wd slides on gravel. We had to put the car into a full side-ways slide at 60kmh and then into 4wd to power out of it, then knock it back into 2wd.

Think Piggy is correct - it's on the visor

That's my understanding too (read the handbook 8) ), HH to HL and back at any speed, but stop and into neutral HL to LL or back.

                  Hi all,

Piggy your tip paid off, it is on the card behind the visor so i am now set to go.
from my interpretation of the card i am right to do the HH - HL at a reasonable speed but HL - LL and vice versa can be done at no more than 8 kph better still not moving at all.

Bear as yet i am still to get the manuals for the vehicle from the dealer i purchased the vehicle from. I don't expect to see them until next week.

                  Cheers

it doesnt matter wheather you have manual or auto, i wouldnt be doing anything over 10km/h when shifting from 4h to 4l, unless ya want to rip the arse out of ya transfer case, think about doing 100kmh and jamming it back into first gear, thats my 2 cents
had an 03 gx 120 with some gear now got a 2013 bt 50 GT auto some ARB gear.

Sounds like you've got it figured. Now you get to test it out
One warning, it is much easier to get mud on and under and in, than it is to get it back off and out.

The Problem with shifting between HL and LL is there are no syncros. As 99% of the population don't know how to use a crash box, toyota just make it simple and tell you to stop first. If you are experienced in driving crash boxes you can do it, but if you don't do it right the damage could be Nasty (read expensive).
