  • Prado 120 series some help...

    Hi all,

First time posting, been reading up alot!!!

Finally decided to buy a 120 series prado with a budget of about $25k. Don't no much about 4wd's first time buying one and have no clue what to look for or watch out for!!!

Will be mainly using it for the family around the suburbs. I do tow my quintrex hornet 435 around weekly and maybe 5 times a year i go on a long trip with the boat as far as 500 to 600km away.

Will be doing some beach fishing/4wd every now and then.

I have my mind set on a diesel and not petrol the reason being is i do tow my boat a fair bit and think diesel will be the better choice! I could be wrong and want someone to clear it up please if possible.

I've been hearing alot of good things about the 1KZ and not so much about the D4D engine's. What would you guys reccomend?

I will be keeping this car for a long time of period.

Thank you all in advanced and appreciate all replies and help.

    Regards
    Bash

        Hey,

If you are mainly doing town driving, your 25K budget will get you a nice petrol auto.

        If you have a look at this thread you can see the running cost comparison between petrol and diesel;

        http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...ost-comparison

...and in post #119 on p8 you can find a comparison of purchase cost between petrol and diesel, where you'll see around a $6000 cheaper purchase cost for a petrol with 150000km on it.

Just go to p10 of the thread to see some large plots of the final model analysis where you can compare running costs of diesel and petrol for various economies. The average saving for diesel is around $500/year, in the order of $40/month.

Towing wise, there's bugger all difference in peak torque between the diesel and petrol, the torque just comes on at lower revs in the diesel. The petrol will tow just as well as the diesel, but you will chew more fuel.

Purchase wise you've got $6000 up your sleeve, or 12 years worth of fuel.

You'll spend a little more on petrol towing, but you won't have to worry about it being a grenade.

With the 1kd, it has much more poke than the 1kz.
Stick with 02/08 onwards so you can avoid oil starvation issues.
Then put fresh injectors etc & you will be loving it.

If you find a D4D and a V6 with everything identical and both at $25K, then the obvious choice would be the D4D. But the resale of the D4D is high and as Whitey said, the savings in the purchase price of the V6 can go towards the petrol.

Important thing is to do your sums. Then decide on which motor to buy.

                      DONT WORRY Be HAPPY

There are a small percentage of people that just worry. Please don't!
I deal with a few, bit of psychotherapy?

Sorry you are a worrier, I suggest you relax & enjoy, you have tech stream, if its lasted this long & injectors & egr are sorted it will be fine.
We all have more chance of a major health problem, eg; heart, diabetes or cancer. Don't worry about that either, just relax & have a good time while looking after yourself.

My old saying, why worry? Basically,
If you can do something then do it to fix the problem, if you can not do anything then don't worry you cannot do anything
Just keep going back to it when you are worried, it cured me.
If it blows, 8k long motor plus fitting, who cares? It's just money. Like it can't blow up every year, lets say it blows up every 5 years, worst luck ever!, $2000 a year out of your $100,000k+?p.a no biggy! But not going to happen so even less.
If its really bothering you, you should move it on, life is too short for worry.

So peeps, don't worry, I'm not, I have to pay $8000+ fitting or buy engine stands / cranes etc just like you.
I don't do engines, I do injectors etc.
                      No worry........

I know a hypnotherapist in Sth morang, you can try that, it has worked for other members. She's good!

                      I hope that helps someone.

You missed my point, the original poster asked what is better to buy 2nd hand. I suggested a petrol auto as it's a nicer car to drive daily and is bullet proof reliable. Why buy into a potential money pit if you don't need to...

I didn't miss it, i understand your answer & fair call.
I was just trying to get you more comfortable with your vehicle.
There's lots of reasons for owning the diesel, if there was not we could all go & sell the diesel & buy a petrol & have $5000-10000 for fuel
Personally I much prefer the drive of the diesel, turbo torque over a fan noise revver.
The petrol is not quite bulletproof, & the diesel is the same if you do the right things.

I see plenty with over 220k & they are just run in
