Hi guys just looking for a bit of advice on what I need or recommend i do to my standard 120 V6 auto Prado for a trip to the cape. I have been around 4wd'ing for a number of years but just looking for the heads up! Will be 4 or so cars going with plenty of recovery gear but I was wondering if it's worth fitting a snorkel or anything else. Can't afford to spend a crap load on it so looking for necessities only. Cheers

The advice provided is general advice only. It has been prepared without taking into account your objectives, financial situation or needs. Before acting on this advice you should consider the appropriateness of the advice, having regard to your own objectives, financial situation and needs.................blah blah...........
Mainly the obvoius, Make sure the vehicle is reliable, it's a Prado so your about done.
Good offroad tyres & lift would be advisable.
Check water crossings & hook up before you go, as its a matter of pure luck if you make it, or drown the vehicle as many members here have.
Take tools & spare fuel & air filters.
Snorkel?
Perhaps some of the caped crusaders can offer some additional caped advise.

The trip sounds great. I am a relatively new member but I think it is safe to say some things that would come in handy are:
First aid kit
Recovery gear/ Recovery boards/ max tracks, one or the other
UHF radio
GPS
Deep floor mats
Racks/ cargo platform
Tyre puncture repair kit
Hilux washers(cheap mod) don't forget the bonnet liner clips, I broke three)
Bullbar( even a second hand cheapie)
Seat covers
Spare fan belt/ fuel filters
Tool kit( shifter/ socket set/ pliers/ flat head and Phillips head screwdriver/ electrical connectors/ a variety of fuses that your car uses/ tie wire/ duct tape/ zip ties
Water storage
Roof top cargo bag
sunscreen/ zinc cream
Stubbie holders
Snorkel is the go for avoiding massive amounts of dust and getting better fuel economy from the cooler air
A note book with specs for the vehicle like tyre specs, part numbers, parts suppliers contact details (towns you will be passing through to forward order if something breaks as internet might not be available)
The BP app for fuel stations (it has the GPS co`ordinates in it)
spare phone charger cords
torches x 2 and spare batteries
Any medication/ scripts in a sealed container clearly marked MEDS
The medical app on I phone with emergency contact details and any allergies noted
Hope this helps, I am sure other members will add more to the load with things like the kitchen sink and spare engines!!!
Have fun mate and get back to us with a post trip report!!

Once the car is serviced, everything working, etc. I would look at suspension (shocks at a minimum, but full kit preferred), snorkel and good A/T tyres. I would consider these a must for a cape trip.
You don't have to each take a full tool kit if you're traveling with others, just make sure you have one between you (saves weight and gives you extra room). Recovery gear can also be shared (you don't all need the full kit), but I would take my own recovery strap and shackles that fit your recovery points. I would take vehicle specific filters and any other spares you may need, but one container of nuts, bolts, screws, etc. between the group would also be fine.
You don't need a bullbar, you don't need sliders, you just need a bit of common sense and avoid driving at times when the wildlife is around.
Once you have all that I would really want a UHF, even a decent hand held would do the job.
Most of all take it easy and enjoy the trip

I did Cape a few yrs back in a stock Patrol apart from mud tyres, bullbar and a snorkel. The one mod I wish I had was sliders as Palm crk was impossible without them. Sure you could drop down it. Didn't matter what line you took you would end up with sill damage without sliders. Witnessed many lifted cars do damage here. Mud tyres aren't needed. Tyres I believe are more luck than anything. I had tyres that were $200 each and did no damage. A mate had BFG muddies and he did 3 of them. A water bra or small tarp for Nolans and Logans are a must.
Great spot. Enjoy.
