1KZTE gutless @3000rpm

I've only had my 2004 Prado for a few months. I'm not sure if there is anything wrong with it, but it seems quite gutless once it gets to around 3000rpm. It doesn't really want to accelerate past this with any kind of urgency. Are they all like this? All out of puff once they get to 3k? It's done it since I've had it (now 180,000km). Runs fine, starts fine, no smoking issues or funny noises. Thoughts please?
Do the KZ motors suffer any of the gunking up that the later KD motors get? What else could be causing it?

I assume its a diesel 1kZTe. If so then welcome to the revs of diesel motors. All is normal. Enjoy.

I've come from a Mitsi L400 Delica with the 2.8 turbo diesel. 3000rpm was bang in the middle of it's power band - it wouldn't run out of puff until 4000rpm. The Prado, once it gets past 2900... nothing. Are you sure that's normal? It's due for a service soon so I'll get the mechanic to take it for a drive, but I'm surprised to say the least.

No that's about it. That's why I fitted a DP Chip and 2 3/4 exhaust... goes a lot better!! I don't think I would ever get mine up to 3000 rpm... rarely if it does.

Definitely they are a slug until you can unplug the exhaust

try using a can of liqui moly fuel system cleaner or diesel injector cleaner. It wont remove all the gunk but it'll loosen it up over time
