  • Got a clunk

    Hi Guys
Well I have a issue with a strange clunking sound that seems to be coming from my front end area. When I reverse out a driveway as in just going down in the gutter I get this clunk from the drivers side mainly like something is releasing and clunk sound it's fine driving just does it in reverse out of driveways. I have replaced the lower control arms both sides and new D bushes on sway bar and put a spanner on most bolts ever since I put a 2inch lift in seems to have this clunk any ideas would be good ?

Don't panic. It's just the brake pads resetting, all perfectly normal.

        Can you explain?

Mine does not make a specific clunk when reversing and then braking but it does make some unusual metallic noises.
        Could this be the same

We might need a Perth Clunk/knock/metallic meet

Maybe it only happens in Perth, something to do with the geographical environmental and any other word that ends in "al"

It's the stainless steel inserts in the front calipers that sit between the pad and the caliper. When you reverse the pads move slightly. I removed mine with new pads and it doesn't do it anymore. One of those quirky Toyota things.

Thanks for your help on the issue Bushbasher...... You talking about the backing plates on the pads to remove ?

I think the stainless is just there to help prevent the brake pad steel backing from rusting and sticking to the piston. When I dumped mine and fitted new pads I didn't reinstall the stainless plates and seems the reverse clunk doesn't happen anymore.

lower control/wishbone bolts are loose, where the camber caster is adjusted. Use a BIG socket and bar to tighten.

Mine used to do this. Changing to a different pad stopped it. Can't recall if we refitted the little backing plates.

Top shockie mount ? The hole gets elongated and the shockie shaft moves when you reverse ??

Check the clearance between the spring base and the sway bar. I had a suspension lift installed and had a clunk on the passenger side front and found it was the strut spring base rubbing on the sway bar. It was most noticeable when reversing out of the driveway. Made a squeaking sound when you compressed the suspension when stopped. Worth a look.
