  • Sound and harshness coming from engine?

    Hey all,

Just wondering if anyone can help. Im on my second 120. First one was an 05 Grande V6 and sold it with 226km (regrettably), I now have a 2008 GXL V6 with 250kms.

I just noticed today that when I drive around normally, it sounds like the sound of the engine is directly filtering into the cabin. Its almost like a grommet was not replaced or something. Its not muted like my old prado was. Its hard to explain. Its not loud or anything, its just like there is something open between the firewall and its coming into the cabin.

Secondly, the engine idles beautifully and doesnt stutter or cough, however when I drive around normally also, it feels harsh. Its like an engine mount is gone. That mildly vibey, buzzing feel. Its not bad, but noticeable. Again, in comparison to my old 120. I discounted the engine mounts because it idles so nicely and revs out great also. I also checked the tranny mounts and they are fine.

Anyone have an idea of where I can start looking?

I had some ugly sounds coming through my firewall after I pulled some extra wires through the firewall grommet (where all cables pass through) - I had dislodged it from its mounting and there was a large hole letting engine bay noise through particularly under acceleration/deceleration. this is apparently normal for the 120, something to do with the design of the headers - early ones were bad for it and they thought theyd fixed it with the later 120s but not very well apparently - I found out about this on one of the prado sites after the missus insisted on going for drive the day I did the wiring job. so, if your engine bay seals/grommets are intact you may have other issues - I know the missus' lancer was starting to make growling noises before we traded it in even though many mechanics deemed that particular model to be 'bulletproof'
