  • Height for garage clearance

    Hi All

I am picking up my new GXL diesel next Friday, fitted with Sov Bar, reverse sensors, LF 240, tow pack and a few other minor accessories.
    Can't wait.............

If anyone is able to advise the clearance I require to fit under my roller door, ie hieght between floor and bottom of roller when up, I would really appreciate it. It will not have anything fitted to the roof rails.

This will allow me time to modify my roller set up if required.

    Thanks for your anticapated help.

PS - a great and very informative site that I have enjoyed looking at whilst waiting the last 5 months for my new Prado.

I run 2m with OME lift, 265/70 tyres and roof bars. Car park at work is 2.10 and it's close to some of the pipe work

I push my roller door up a few cm extra once the motor cuts out, haven't got around to modifying it yet. If I don't the cage rack on top and the lights scrape. If you can reach (Mrs Yorkes can't) try pushing the door up to its maximum and then measure. It might save you some remodeling until you decide on all the extras, ie 2inch lift, roof cross bars or rack.......

Standard height, you'll get away with 1950mm easy.

If you are planning on fitting roof rack 210-215 would be the minimum

Good question Bettsy. I had some old crappy garage doors that were so heavy a weight lifter would be proud. The door springs were stuffed, the framing was all solid timber and consequently was a bit twisted when at the top. I had to place a screw driver and a file and wedge them in particular spots to drive the Prado in safely.

Now I got a 2" lift and Cooper ST 265/70 tyres and it just poked under by 1cm to spare. If the screw driver fell out, then I would expect the door to come down and damage the roof of the Prado.

$3500 later, I got two new remote controlled doors that, when open, are flat in the roof space and I gained some height.

I now have 2100mm from floor to ceiling to glide the Prado inside the garage. Now this is with a 2008 GXL with 2" lift and cooper tyres, roof rails and roof cross bars attached, ARB steel Winch-bar. I have approx 75mm spare. I just cannot fit anything on the roof cross bars to comfortably drive out of the garage.

So I would think with normal tyres, no lift and nothing on your roof rails you would get away with Toyota recommended height clearance. But to give you a little extra, measure twice to avoid any damage before you retrofit the doors or fit new ones. It may just save you a few thousand dollars.

You would have thought that I would have measured the garage door height before purchasing the Prado.....! ops:

Is anyone able to confirm for me that the stated width of a Prado (1790mm) includes the side mirrors?
I assume that it would but just wanted to be absolutely sure.
                    Thanks

Don't forget to add the UHF aerial height if you are planning to get one because I just scored a very good aerial(mate gave it to me before he sold his 4wd ) and I put it on and had to take it back off because I couldn't get the Prado into the garage by 6".

I use my UHF ant as a guide as to where I can fit. Bit like a cat with whiskers.

I use a short stubby around town, keep the longer arial with 6db gain for the big trips. roof mounts give better range tho I'v not been able to measure the difference.

... and just to be sure, to be sure ......

There's a cable tie, trimmed to exact length, inserted through the cap on top of the phone aerial and taped into place, so that it is 50 mm higher than the rear of the roof rack (its highest point).

This way I have an exact reference point, and early warning device, for carports, underground carparks etc ....

This 5 cent device has saved me $$$$$$$$
