Yes, the noise only existed when driving. At idle and revving the engine without moving didn't produce the noise for some reason. Maybe when you drive it must put more load on the pulley or something. It took a while to pin point where the squeak was coming from.

Through a process of elimination knocking things out one at a time we diagnosed it as the alternator pulley bearing playing up. So we bought a new alternator and fitted it. Squeak gone.
Maybe you could soak your pulley bearing with Inox or something to see if the squeak disappears. Just remember to wipe the plastic pulley clean before refitting the belt or the belt will slip like mad.

Please Help squeaky / whistling sound
I have a 120 series prado, owned since new and its been a fantastic car, after a recent trip to Brisbane it developed a squeaky/whistling noise that's driving me mad
The noise appears to be coming from the front left hand side and it does get louder when you open the glove box, It doesn't develop until I have done around 200klms of driving.
It is still there when I apply the brakes, when I turn off the AC, it does seem to decrease when I accelerate, the wheel hubs seem to be the same temp so I don't think its a bearing. I have had the car up on ramps and checked everything and cant find anything loose, the driveline unis have been greased, when it appears its only there from approx. 60kph and above.
Today I pulled over again to check the usual and I went over a small ditch and it disappeared for another 40klms [/B]and then came back.
Any help would be greatly appreciated I live hundreds of klms for a mechanic and with something like this could cost me a fortune guessing the issue and not fixing the problemTags: None
