  • auto shudder problem

    Gday guys

I have a 2007 D4D auto and am so far very impressed with the vehicle. However i find that when i pull up to a stop at an intersection the car has an uncomfortable shudder if i leave it in gear with my foot on the break. It acts like it want to keep on going. It does this about 70% of the time. I have always had manuals but have driven autos before and dont remember every having to knock it into neutral when you pull up at an intersection. Has anyone else experienced this problem. I am coming up to my 20000k service but wanted any feedback from fellow prado drivers before i visit the pit crew.

    Any feedback would be great

      Hi diesel82,

Yes my diesel auto has just started that shudder thing as well, it started a bit after the 20,000 service. It's a different thing to the the "thud" felt in the rear. I've been warming the car up for at least 10 minutes before I leave in the morning considering how cold it is, and it doesn't seem to make much difference. It only seems to happen on the first drive of the day, once or twice. After that it seems ok. I'd like to take it back to Toyota, but I would have to leave it overnight, and that takes planning  ! If you find anything before me, let me know...

Same with mine.. mine does it when its cold mostly and occasionally when the engine has been running all day.

It's very uncomfortable when its happening.. everything in the car shakes, including my flabby cheeks... yes both of them.

I asked about it at my last service, obviously it wouldn't perform for the grease monkeys so they reported no problem found. Be nice to get a common thread going here of people with the same issue.

Mine shudders too, and like the rest of you it started shortly after the 20,000 service. To me it seems as if it is assosciated with the Auto Transmission Fluid Temperature. I don't understand Autos at all and how the temp could make a difference, but I find that it doesn't matter how long the engine has been running, it seems to be more related to how far I have actually driven. If I just do short runs to the shop and back the shudder will remain all day. If I drive 20km or more it seems to go away. The only hole in my theory though is that it does occasionally do it when the fluid is well and truly warm.

Perhaps someone with more Auto knowledge could suggest if i am possibly on the right track.

Mine has the shudders, not when coming to a stop, but when taking off. When I take off for the first couple of times from a standstill it shakes and shudders and then sorts itself out. It doesn't make any noises but just feels like somethings slipping? Very strange. I've even tried the "2nd gear start" to see if it's a problem with first gear but it still seems to do it. It started about a month ago. First only a couple of times a week but in this last week (which has been bloody freezing down here) it's doing it more often than not. I have a major service (160k) coming up so hopefully a tranny oil change will be all it needs.

*** should probably move this thread to "Drivetrain" ??
