  • Tensioner pulley or something else???

    Hi all,

After a drive at the beach this week, my Prado developed a squeak that sounded like a bearing going bad. On the way home (after a couple of hours of driving), the squeak got works (as expected) and a few kms from the house, the accessory lights came on, the radio and AC stopped working and the alternator light came on (along with all other lights). I've interpreted this as no electricity going to accessories, which doesn't sound like a simpler tensioner pulley, but something bigger. I turned the car on this morning to see if I could detect the squeak, but everything was quiet and running smoothly, except the accessory lights are on and now the battery is too low to start the engine again.

Before I spend a heap on parts that don't need fixing, I'm taking the serpentine belt off this morning to see if I can find a rough spinning pulley, but am also wondering what y'all think it may be... alternator? Something else? Thanks heaps in advance.

    Sound like the alternator pulley.
It’s a clutch type free spins one way locks the other. Maybe yours is free both ways.
Take off the belt and spin by hand.
$80 on eBay and maybe a 17 mm hex

Cheers mate, this saves me buying a new alternator, which is what I've been researching!

I installed the new pulley this last weekend. It took an hour or two, but i needed a second pair of hands to get the alternator back in place. Of potential interest, I pulled the alternator out through the bonnet rather than through the wheel well quite easily.
