Tinted Windows on New Prado

Hi all,

We had just taken delivery of new D4D GXL Prado and have requested tinted windows as an option. I am led to believe that the vehicle comes standard with all windows tinted except for the drivers and passengers window.

The tint that was put on these windows is noticeably different in color and shade than the other windows, it has more of a green/olive tinge to it rather than a dark/smoke color.

I spoke to the dealer and he says this is normal (surprise) however I have seen several Prados on the road that do not seem to have the same issue.

Does or has anyone experienced this.

There's all types of tint you can get... It is certainly quite possible to get the tint matched.

Sounds like your dealer just wants to push it on through and get on with the next sale. I've got midnight express from tint a car on mine and it matches pretty well although it is lighter than the standard tint. Other guys on PP have been able to match it up right down to the shade.

The tinted windows in the Prado don't offer much UV protection. So get all windows covered with UV film and this will help the colour match. I got mine "Minged" and it looks great.

I'll never get a dealer to do a tint job because its always sub-contracted and the dealer keeps approx 90% - 100% margin. 5 windows on a Prado will cost around $250 - $300, the dealer normally charges around $500 - $550.

when the vehicles started coming from toyota with the privacy glass (dark tinted look),
we (toyo dealer) had to get our tinter to order and match the tint film.
this was done and since have had not problem (match).
the match wont be perfect as 1 is glass and the other is film.
i would say go back and ask for the salespersons manager.

i got 20% tint (dark and reflective) and we love it.
the legal film (NSW) is 35% film and this is not very dark and on my other car,
i have this and it sounds similar in appearance.

Might vary from state to state but I was warned against going darker than legal in case of a defect and possibly no insurance.

One thing to watch with tint, the good UV resistant stuff is a metallic film & if you put it on the side windows to the cargo area/third row seats it will interfere with AM radio transmission. I got darkest legal UV tint on the front & middle passenger windows and a straight tint on the cargo area. The UV metallic tint is guaranteed for life whilst the dyed film tint is guaranteed for 5 years - but I like the AM radio for the cricket & footy! Have had it 2 years now and so far so good. Cost me $300-$350 from memory.
