Be gentle guys...I am new on hear.

I have a strange noise...let me exlplain....Start vehicle from cold, select gear[auto], move off and I get a sort of whooooo noise, take my foot off accelerator and the whoooo dies away, accelerate and up it come again.
It sounds similar to an owl hooting :shock: or like a mini siren.

I have taken it into Toyota, they said it's okay.

The noise is not as apparent when engine is hot, but if I concentrate I can still hear under acceleration [it now sounds similar to the turbo]
I have had two other guys reply in the UK one says he had same noise but sold the vehicle, another guy was made up that he found someone else with the problem......or is it a problem. :?
My vehicle is obviously second hand and I have a warranty on it, but would like to sort the noise prior to the warranty expiring.
It appears now that the only people that can help is owners.

Hi Thor,
I get a similar noise with my D4D diesel manual when accelerating and during gear changes up, it is a combination of turbocharger, swirlcontrol valve and EGR valve all doing their stuff, creating some interesting if you are a (gingerbear) induction noises.
My engine runs well so I am not worried about this noise, it goes with the engine.

i would also say
(not having any other details on your vehicle other than D4D)
turbo, or dry drive belt.
either are no problem.

When in Toyota they checked belts, removed belts and run........they said it was okay also.

Is it the engine limiting the turbo boost on a cold engine, i have it too. Sounds great with the manual gearbox.
Listen to a scania v8 back off on load.
Or do what i do an leave the mrs at home its amazing how many noises seem to disappear.

this was my 1st thought reading your explanation.

I have another car that's got this problem at the moment. Tickle the throttle and it gets louder/quicker with revs until it disappears. One day I'll have to do something about it

maybe noisy idler pulleys on the serpentine belt?
or clutch in the alternator pully worn.

Pretty good timing to bring this thread back up though.. My V6 is sounding like a diesel at the moment with what I think is a noisy idler bearing up front which will be looked at when it gets it's 160k service this weekend.. ( hopefully that's all it is!)

Perhaps when the elusive V6 TDI is released mjr. That would probably be worth making a rattle!!!
