  • Service interval VS warranty

Does anybody know what the "rules" are surrounding warranty periods and scheduled services. i.e. if the delivery date of a new car is 31 October and the 12 month service isn't done until say 15th November does/do Toyota then refuse any future warranty claims as the vehicle technically didn't have a 12 month service?
    Thanks

One of my Toyotas did 10000kms in 3 years..... Never had an issue with it. I would highly doubt they would baulk at a claim because of a 30 day period.

It's a difficult question. Exactly where do they draw the line. If you're one month late then my opinion is you'd be ok if your km's weren't too wildly different from the expected 12 month total. Two months? I'd say you'd be starting to push it. Maybe if you're km's were lower than expected you might get away with it. I know people who live in regional areas though, who often miss their servicing (Jeep) by more than a month and haven't had an issue with warranty. My dealer wouldn't give me an answer on this when I questioned it with them. They simply said don't go too much over the time period or Km's.

Just my opinion but at the end of the day I think it would depend on the nature of the warranty claim that would have Toyota scrutinize your service history. If you had a bad service history where you were really late for your major services then Toyota might be more likely to hold you up on it. If you were a bit late for the odd one I really don't think there'd be an issue. For something really major though like a dead engine or something where push comes to shove, a tardy service history could very well work against you.

        Thanks for the replies.
I suppose I probably should assume that as no-one has replied with any bad experiences it probably isn't too strict. One would hope that if you made a reasonable attempt to get things done on time then they would be reasonable also. As mentioned though, If it came to a big ticket item like replacing an engine would they look for any way out.

Yeah BH I suppose it comes down to the fact that there are a lot of Toyota dealers out there each with their own ideas on what is acceptably late concerning servicing. I might get away with being two months late for a major service at my dealer whereas you may not. It's difficult to put a solid figure on, as it'll be situation dependent. But I really think that the more serious the warranty claim, the more closely your service history will be scrutinized.

I think the best you can say is that within limits the servicing schedule isn't strict. Concerning future warranty claims, you've got an acceptable window to have your vehicle in for a major service. The extent of that acceptable window will be dealer dependent.
