• Toyota Towbar Recall ? <Not Valid>

I had the 40 k service on my Sep 07 build Prado today.

Listed on the service report is "Towbar Recall- carried out work as per campaign bulletin" and listed as "Warranty" (i.e. no charge)

Has anyone heard of this recall ?

The desk jockey doing my account didn't know the details and I didn't have time to hang around.

Adrian

PS: I searched the Pradopoint site before posting this but didn't see anything about it.

I have checked with contacts in Toyota HO and there is no valid Towbar recalls on the Prado. (And may not ever have been?) <Mod TP> (Title changed to avoid creating a panic )
Adrian.

These are the recall campaigns listed as active at the moment:

Variant:
Date Range: 17/04/96 - 06/01/99
VIN Ranges: see file
Status: Active
Defect: Insufficient strength in the rear axle shaft flange.
Consequences: In certain driving conditions the axle shaft may crack & in the worst case the wheel can become separated from the vehicle.
Corrective action: All vehicles will have the axle shaft replaced.
Notif. Date: 19/05/2006
DOTARS No.: R06/063

That is the only one listed as being active at the moment, nothing on towbars.

We have had this one done on our old Prado. Worst thing we ever did. Since they have done it the rear end always smells hot and Toyota can't fault it even though they can smell it!!!!!(like having brakes overheat) And the handbrake is constantly shot and out of adjustment, once again toyota can't seem to figure out whats going on, and they say they are not connected

Hi Bigfella,
The first thing I would be doing is taking the vehicle to another mechanic, put the vehicle on a hoist and get under and check out the exhaust system myself. Take photos with a digital camera of any suspect components or mechanics observations. Then return this info to your Toyota dealership.

Clifton,

Have done this bar photos, and our other mechanic can't fault it either. We have thrown genuine and non genuine brake shoes in it and after a couple of weeks its all out of adjustment again. The smell is nowhere near as bad as it used to be, but the car only does about 10k a year now mostly in short trips, so I am not really all that fused about it. Just peeved that's all.

Re: Toyota Towbar Recall ?

Probably to fix the stupid original installation process of running the loom through the cabin air exhaust flap that leads to some pretty bad dust ingress into the jack area. Funnily enough there is a captive grommet on the loom that fits a precut hole just above the cabin air exhaust perfectly - reran the loom myself immediately after delivery of my VX last Dec after noticing daylight shining up from under the jack - no dust

I had the same, the grommet had not been put back in properly.. Lots of dust ingress.

Re: Toyota Towbar Recall ?

Just contacted my local dealer where I've had it serviced to date and they had nothing listed against my vehcicle nore did they know anything about an issue with the towbar. The only thing they did mention was the rear axel which sounds just like Big Fella's issue.

Re: Toyota Towbar Recall ? <Not Valid>

I see you rang the city store today.. I spoke to my friend in Toyots HO and there is no valid recall on the Towbars.

Title has been changed as such to avoid a panic reaction.
