  • K&N AIR FILTER

    HI FELLAS,
JUST A QUICK QUESTION, I HAVE JUST PUT A K&N AIR FILTER IN MY 05 V6 PRADO, IT RUNS BETTER I BELIEVE, BUT I HAVE HEARD FROM SOMEWHERE THAT SOME ENGINES MIGHT FAIL DUE TO THE OILS FROM THE FILTER.
HAS ANYBODY HEARD OF THIS OR NOT?
OR SHOULD I JUST LEAVE IT AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS... I THINK THE CAR DOES RUN BETTER WITH IT AND I GOT BETTER MILEAGE ON A RECENT TRIP TO THE GOLD COAST. :?
    150 on order ??

    Re: K&N AIR FILTER

I have a friend with a 2000 model Diesel Prado. He stuck a K&N filter in a couple of years ago and has done around 70,000km since with no problems.

      Re: K&N AIR FILTER

I know a lot of people swear by K+N filters, Finer Filters etc but in most industry testing, OE paper element filters actually filter fine dust particles better. K+N might give better airflow meaning slightly better response but personally I'd prefer an OE filter if I was going on a long dusty trip.

      Just my 2 cents...

          Re: K&N AIR FILTER

well for me, i first fitted the JBA exhaust system (without the headers) and i got a very good performance and more milage then i fitted K&N air filter and it even performed better ofcourse but i lost the more milage thang..i cant understand why...but i really love the way the engine sounds.

This is true the only filter I know that is better than the oe paper filter is the uni filter. I had one in my 100 series and it worked a treat.

I have a K&N in for city driving and a UNI Filter for trips. You can certainly see how much crud the UNI catches compared to the alternatives. The problem with them is if you have a MAF sensor it can deposit oil on the hot wire which in turn can give the ECU false readings

Have had a K&N in for 60k and no engine failure!! Just gave the MAF sensor a squirt and seems to run better and more responsive.

                  I use a k&n in my 1kz.
                  50,000klms no probs.

You do need to oil it heavily for offroad.
Also a thin smear of rubber grease around the rubber to help seal it.
I service other prados without those 2 precautions, see fine dust on the clean side, NOT GOOD!
                  Oil up!

On road conditions they are fine. Offroad use caution.

I didn't know you could buy a K&N for a 120! Ive used K&NS in many 4wds in all sorts of conditions for years without a drama. My 2007 D4D has a unifilter but I would love to find a K&N to suit it.

Silly as it is, no listing for either the kdj120 or the kzj120 diesel, can't remember which one, but same air box. So go ahead & tell the supplier to sell you the wrong one because it will be right. Right? I you followed that jumble :-)

Also known as 'rock catchers'. I would avoid them (from experience previous to Prado).

Im amazed as to these bad reports! I have no reason to disagree with you all except that in my experience with other tucks Ive had K&Ns have filtered perfectly in all environments including major dust. Ive have had impeccable service from them with zero problems at all. So respectfully I ask if anyone has actually had a drama with K&Ns or are these just theories?

Once again I'm not trying to put shit on anyone i'm just trying to get to the guts of the matter.

Mudduck I really don't know. I ran K&N on my dirt bikes for years and never had any dust inside the intake but I wouldn't use one on my car or 4wd. Just in case.

Yes, Mudduck I've worked with them on a few vehicles (including my own-cars and bikes). All were serviced as per instructions, and fitted correctly.

in all instances there was evidence of dust passage on the engine side of the filter. The filters did show signs of actually doing something, but were still passing very fine particles (almost like the consistency of talk). I made sure the filter was sealing on both sides (or around the flange in the case of pod-style), but this made no difference.

Hence my flippant remark about them being rock catchers. On my vehicles I replaced them with paper filters and had no further problems with dust downstream of the element.

Personally, I won't use or recommend them any more, but your results may vary
