  • Build up of water in rear boot door

After a 3 hour trip up to Sydney in a torrential downpour I noticed a slushing noise coming from the rear of my rig. After inspecting the rear boot door I found that it had quite a bit of water in it.

Has anyone else come across this issue? I'm a bit concerned about rust building up within the door. Are there any particular seals on the rear door that might contribute to this problem?

The vehicle is still under warranty, I'll be taking it into a Toyota dealership first thing monday morning.

    Hi Fungi,
You should not have water in your rear door, your main body seal around the cabin is probabaly damaged/ perished. I would also check the main wiring loom penetration into the rear door is intact, also check that the door number plate and latch assembly is not cracked and is a neat fit to the rear door skin.
If the vehicle has had lots of off road use it may also have a perished/ damaged rear glass seal.
Also remove the spare wheel and check the integrity of the rear door skin in way of the spare wheel mounting studs, and look for any cracks in the door assembly which may allow water to enter the inner skin.

      Fungi,
there are a couple of threads about possible causes in the Body/Chassis section of the forum. You might want to have a look there. In my particular instance it was the seal around the high level brake light leaking.

      Cheers

Re: Build up of water in rear boot door

I notified Toyota of the issue and they'll be looking into it for my 80000km service.

My concern is rust occuring prematurely. Should I be asking Toyota to replace the rear door? Treating it? What do you guys think?

Re: Build up of water in rear boot door

Took the car to Toyota and they told me that:
            1. The seal between the rear window and the door has come apart slightly allowing water to flow into the door,
            2. Build of water was due to drains in the door clogging up (clogging has been removed and drains are now functioning),
            3. The rear windows needs to be resealed (warranty job),
            4. It is normal for water to seep through the rear window and through the drains

I voiced my concerns about premature rusting to the rear door, to that they replied that the door has been cleaned and treated and if there are any signs of it occurring that it has been noted on the car history and deal with it as a pre-existing fault.

I'm not too sure there is anything else they can do. What do you people think?

I had the same problem, forgot to clean the plugs at the bottom of the rear door after returning from the Cape, i.e. they couldn't drain. Toyota replaced the rear door hinges under warranty as well.

Re: Build up of water in rear boot door

I've found water can get past the seals on the rear side windows. This is evidenced by the water marks on the inside of the glass. It doesn't appear much but I may have used too much pressure from the hose when washing the car. Haven't seen too much rain to see if this will get past the seal though.
