  • Quality service from Toyota

Our last experience at the local Toyota service department.
I prepared the Prado for our trip to Fraser. The 60k service was due so I booked it in a few days before we left. Imagine my horror on the third day at Fraser when I discovered that the airbox lid was not clipped down :| Luckily there was very little sand in there, I would say that the induction vacuum helped seal the box when the motor was running, well that's what I tell myself anyway.
How about this. I fitted a set of recovery points to the front of the P and discovered that the two bottom radiator bolts were missing. The rad was swinging back and forth on the top two bolts! My wife took the P in for the above service and told them about the missing bolts. When she picked the car up they told her that the radiator was fine, it is designed to move due to vibration and is fitted with big rubber washers. They treated her like she was an idiot, were condescending and rude. She phoned me almost in tears and I just about hit the roof. I rang them immediately, gave 'em a serve. My wife took the car back, got the same atitude from the service manager again and waited for someone to look at the radiator. A little while later one of the goons came in and she overheard the conversation. The manager basically said "ya didn't find anything missing did ya" the mechanic then said "well actually she's right, there is two bolts missing" He went away, we got the car back without even an aplology.

I will not be going back to Toyota in a hurry.

    Re: Quality service from Toyota

That's one of the reasons I have decided to do all my own servicing.

I bought a trolley jack, car stands, big tool kit, etc, etc.

The outlay on tools will save me money in the long run and I will know that the job has been done properly.

I just bought a good 94pce socket set from Bunnings with 1/2" and 1/4" drives and sockets from 4mm to 34mm, includes imperial and impact sockets too. The brand is BAHCO, it retails for $229 but you can get it on-line for $220. Did a price match got it for $201, bargain

I have all the kit I need but after laying out a rather large sum of money I would prefer some service from the dealers. Besides that I want the log book stamped and the warranty preserved.
I do all the services on our other vehicles, infact I enjoy doing it. Among other things we race Minis so I am fairly handy with a spanner and yes, I have no skin on my knuckles and backs of hands.

It's not only dealer mechanics. As I found out, the local mechanics had forgotten to put the oil cap back on after changing the oil

After every service, do a check of the engine bay, and also make sure the wheel nuts are on tight (more than likely too tight, but that's too hard to tell until you attempt to change the wheel).

The missing lower radiator bolts were probably a result of when the bull bar was installed as you need to loosen them to fit a sovereign bar

The day after my 20K service, I noticed the driver's window no longer fully opened or closed with a single press/pull of the button. Sheesh.

Not a big deal for me, since PP has already described the solution to this problem [window-down then window-up and hold for 1-2s.] Still, this is one of those annoying little things that leaves me constantly wanting to recheck the work of the professionals.

In my experience, the most likely time for car trouble is shortly after a service.

                          Re: Quality service from Toyota

Oh dear, here we go again. Just took the Prado in for its 50,000 service and told them the Tailshaft is thumping and I have done another injector. What is the response to both of those - "Never heard of those problems." then it was " oh the injector is from dirty fuel." Then it was " Oh Denso don't make the injectors" then when informed of the new injector it was "I have not heard of that". The service manager shut up when I rattled off the procedure for replacing the injector. I think he realised that I knew what I was on about.

Makes you really wonder about Toyota service centres. It really is a hit and miss affair. I know Jarvis in Clovelly Park are good and now Pt Augusta as well. Guess I will be booking in at one or the other of thosse to get the injector replaced.

                            Re: Quality service from Toyota

Well just picked up the rig from the Toyota service dept. 50,000km service done and they greased the tailshaft like I asked them to do. However they discovered the following problems:

                            1. Transfer case front tailshaft pinion seal is leaking
                            2. Rear main oil seal is leaking
                            3. Turbo leaking oil internally

When I asked if any of these had been seen to the answer was no they have not got the time to do it. Asked if I could book in to have these fixed before the 10th of Jan and the answer was again no they have not got any available days to get the car booked in. To me it was just a fob off, they quiet simply did not want to deal with the car or me, not that I gave them any grief.

So I guess I will have to take it to another Toyota dealership to get the warranty work done before I head back to Alice. Last thing I want is for the turbo to die in the middle of nowhere. Not real good for a car that costs as much as it does and to have done only 50,000km, might have to seriously reconsider what I get next time cause I have not had the best run out of the Prado that is for sure.
