  • Plastic door panel slightly lose - anyone know a fix?

My driver's door's outside plastic panel is slightly lose and rattles on corrugations etc. Does anyone know how to fix it? Should I somehow pull the whole bugger out and go from there? Or...?

Any pics, advice etc. would be much appreciated. A forum search didn't come up with anything...

Sounds like one or more of the push in plastic clips have either come out or broken off. I guess you've tried pushing the trim pannel to see if they clip back in?

You might have to bite the bullet and take off the trim.

If the clips are just a loose fit, try putting masking tape (few layers if you have too) over the hole and pushing the clip through it.

(The masking tape trick works for those annoying plastic on plastic squeaks in dash trims too)

      Hi Mick,

Yep, have tried to simply push it back, but it doesn't "snap" into place... It does make flush contact though, so that's OK, but then just comes lose again. There's maybe a 5-7mm gap between the plastic panel and the metal panel of the door itself.

Is it in a spot were you can pull the trim back far enough to see whats wrong, without dismantling the whole lot?

The clip may have just come off the trim side.

Even if the clip is broken they are not expensive.. you can even get them at Supercheap auto in those little "Champion" brand packets.

          Hi all

I had the same problem - same door (interesting). Toyota fixed it under warranty. There are about 10 plastic clips and some thin strips of double sided tape. The service manager said that the clips were worth $80. When I laughed and said that I can buy a pack at Supercheap for a few dollars he stated "but there not quite the same". But I bet they will still work OK.

They do, I used a couple on my tail gate trim. They don't come with those little dust seals (if thats what they are :?: ) but you can just slip the Toyota ones over them.

              Hi Mick,

              Thanks again!

Would you happen to know if I can just pull the panel out or is there a 'trick to it'?

I've only ever had the tail gate trim off.

I'd assume the door trims are clipped all the way around the edge with maybe a srew or two near the grab handle/door lock area.

I can look at the workshop manual for you if you get really stuck.

you cannot just pull the door trim off. Firstly, loosen the lock by lifting the little plastic piece, inside you'll find a screw (unscrew it). Then lift the top part of the trim up, after that you can insert a screwdriver and wedge between the door and trim. This should now unclip the door trim fully.

                  hope this helps.

I will be watching this thread with interest, as I too have the same issue on the passenger side, although mine probably only has a gap of about 3 - 5mm. I pointed it out to toyota at the last service, but they would not do anything about it and just said it is "Normal". I told them they were full of crap and pointed out that the other 3 door trims were nice and tight but they still refused. Being the passenger side I don't hear it on corrugations, but it bugs the crap out of me when every time I close that door it rattles!!!

                      G'day Deeptank,

Did you end up fixing the outside plastic panel on your drivers door? I got some cargo pants caught on the same part over the weekend causing it to pull from the door breaking a couple of the clips on the inside. The rattle it makes now is driving me nuts.

If you did fix the plastic did you need to pull the whole thing off, cause I don't think I can reach my hands behind to afix new clips without doing so (I think some people have replied comfusing the plastic inside trim with the outside colour-coded plastic panel).

And on new clips, did you end up finding any at Supercheap/Autoone ect or did you bite the bullet and get them from Toyota?

                      Cheers,

Re: Plastic door panel slightly lose - anyone know a fix?

I tried finding a suitable aftermarket clip without success, so I went to Toyota and got the clips from them.

                        Part number: 7549535010
                        Description: Blue clip
                        Price: $1.60 each

For those wondering what the part looks like the piccy below shows the broken one and the new one next to each other for comparision.

And a piccy of what the underside of the plastci trim looks like.

After spending an hour dismantling the inside door trim looking for the rattle i discovered it was the leading corner of the drivers door outside trim only slightly loose. Got on my back and used a dob of silicone from underneath between the door and the trim. 2 minutes and never heard the rattle since!

Mine rattles too!, drivers side trim on the outside of the door. Do you have to remove the door card (inside of door) to fix thr outer trim? or can you just pull the trim off and replace the clips?
                            Cheers.

It's usually the front lower clip.. 5 bucks at Toyota maximum. It's the orange one. They are colour coded, you can get to it from underneath the door without taking the trim off or the door internal trim. Takes about 1 minute..
