  • Low range issues 07 petrol prado

Guys, any one had this problem? my 07 Petrol crabs under hard lock in low range. That is when reversing my caravan down the side of the house in low range earlier to day on grass i noticed that under hard lock i can feel one of the cars rear wheels slightly jerking.
When i unhooked the van and moved forward under hard left hand down lock it did it again. When i checked the rear tyre i noticed the grass had been ripped out by the LHS rear wheel.
Once it took the car out of low range its back to normal. Should i be worried or is this just the centre diff locking?
    Your help would be appreciated.

    Cheers

Wazza, when you are in low range centre diff locked all wheels are turning at the same speed, so if the surface is hard the wheels will scrabble as especially under full lock as the outside wheel will wan't to go faster than the inside one but it can't as you are all locked up. This will probably be the noise you are hearing and why the grass is ripped up.

It's not a problem as such, but to be expected under the circumstance.

In low range the center diff is locked (assuming you don't have the traction control option pack) With the center diff locked, drive is split 50/50 front and rear. When you turn, the front and rear travel different distances and the stresses caused have to (try) escape somewhere by spinning a wheel/s.

Do this on a surface that has too much grip (on road, firm dirt, concrete etc) and you will get "Drive train wind up" and risk causing some serious damage.

If you ticked the option pack with traction control then I believe you have a center lock botton on the console.. this gives you the ability to unlock the center diff in low range... this would be the way to go when reversing your caravan.

If you have the conventional H-HL-N-L transfer case then you are stuck with a center diff that is always locked when you are in low range... Use caution... it's really only for low traction surfaces where the stresses can escape through the wheels.

Have another read of your owners manual.

Thanks guys. My prado is the GXL so no fancy option pack. I am not used to the modern centre diff systems and now understand. Reminds me many years ago of an international scout 4 x 4 we used to go bush in. Fine when it was in 4 wheel drive and in the rough stuff but a bitch to get back into 2wd. We had to find a sturdy tree and drive slowly into the tree and try to push the tree over with all wheels spinning then rip it out of 4wd. Used to work but with a big bang when she came out.

Many thanks for your help. Prado point is a great help for newuns like myself.
